2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

You do not flash to V3 before rooting. That will prevent you from rooting.
You root straight from stock 1.5
There are ROMs built off of V3 leak so those are what you want. But just to be clear-once again- do not flash to anything if you want to root.

It does seem possible that you can root if you go from 1.5 straight to flashed OTA. Not LV3 but OTA. It is pretty much confirmed, but nobody has gone 100% through the process yet. I believe that will be tested and confirmed later tonight. So maybe you want to keep an eye on that and go that route. Keep an eye on this thread (below) tonight if you are interested in this route.
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/78458-attn-leakers-otad-not-1-5-otaers.html
And this thread
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/78619-went-1-5-ota-you-can-still-root-not-leakers.html
Otherwise just root right from 1.5
I think there is some confusion on this forum between a rooted phone and one that has the leaks installed. They are not the same thing.

Rooted means you have administrative rights to the Operating System.

Installed leaks 2.1 v1, v2, v3 only take you to the next firmware level. You do not get administrative rights. It takes a special version of the release to get a rooted phone.

You cannot go from a rooted 2.1 v2 to a rooted 2.1 v3 simply by installing the 2.1 v3 update. You will end up with a 2.1 v3 that is not rooted.

Wow, this thread is 40 pages, it was like 20 yesterday when I read through it. Without having to read through the last 20 pages, are those with the leak 2.1 v.2 getting the OTA update? I never bothered to do the third leak, too much work to get everything the way I wanted. So I am only on the second leak.
I saw one unconfirmed report of somebody on 2.1 v2 getting the OTA. Haven't seen anybody from 2.1 v3 reporting in.

I saw that one too on the first day of the roll out. I usually don't give much credit to just one report....some people like to report things just to stir the pot a little. I'll just wait and see.

Thanks for replying to my question

so this is definitely off topic but this far along this post its where i am mentally, so v3 = ota is what im gathering at this point and well im not totally impressed with my phone with leak v3 and since the eris is at the end of its run so there may not be new updates after this one here, should i go ahead and bite the bullet and get the incredible ?

hey do I have to root my phone in order to install the 3d gallery? Im running 2.1 downloaded from the link.i would appreciate it if someone could help me out.thanks
You don't have to be rooted to have the 3D gallery. Just search this forum for the 3D gallery app. There is an .apk file available for download. If you are on leak v3 it should work well.

Not sure who you are saying is confused. What I was trying to point out is that if this person wants to root they need to not grab a leak.
But they can (maybe-yet to be 100% confirmed) still root if they upgrade to the OTA.
It seems that this person thinks they should flash to v3leak so that they can root, and that would be a big mistake.

Yeah, if you can pay full retail for it... Verizon will in no shape or form replace your Eris with an Incredible if that's what you were saying.

I would suggest spending some time doing your research before you switch. Surf the forum, watch some youtube, etc. It seems to me from the poking around I've done, the Inc has about as many and even some of the same bugs as Eris with 2.1. AND, if we're as lucky as we've been in the past, HTC/Verizon will show us some love as far as bug fixes go.

My advice: ride it out

I'm getting a kick out of questioning these guys and getting stupid answers.

@VZWSupport what is diff from the 2.1v3 leak and the ota of eris? how sure are you that leakers will get ota? all #'s between the 2 r same.

@sgtcaulk click on this link Quick ?'s on the 2.1 Leak vs. rooting - Android Forums it should help. *NK

@VZWSupport my phones not rooted, i have 2.1 leak. its software numbers are same as the ota. how do i still get the ota if #'s are same?

@sgtcaulk You will receive a notification on your phone within the next 12 days. *NK

@VZWSupport How can you tell some1 has a leaked 2.1 on their phone when all the sw info is the same? 2.1v3 leak #'s are the same as the OTA

@sgtcaulk Tech Support advised that all customers with the leaked version will receive the 2.1 update OTA. *NK

@VZWSupport you told someone else the leaked 2.1 will void warranty? how can you possibly tell it will? all #'s between both are same

Got no answer back, 30 mins ago.

Drilling deep into the 2.1 OTA file that I downloaded, I had a feeling that v3 and the OTA were pretty much going to be one and the same. While in many respects that is unfortunate, as there are several bugs in the build that I wish were fixed, I'm glad I really didn't miss anything by upgrading to the leaks.

The only thing that I miss in 2.1 (leaks) that I had in 1.5 was the ability to pull up a contact and expand upon the notes I had listed for that contact w/o having to go in and act like I'm going to edit the contact. I hope that it is just a glitch with my phone.

Everyone is saying that the ota is the same as the v3. My facebook sync doesn't work right on my v3. Is that at least fixed in the ota?

I have the v3 leak on my phone, and I just updated my wife's from 1.5 to the OTA. As far as I can tell, there are absolutely no differences between the two. All of the software info is the same, and I went app by app checking to see if there was any differences. So far, they look exactly the same to me.

I would believe a rooted version of the OTA will happen a lot sooner than a rooted version of 2.1v3 if indeed it ever happens.

I think a lot of people believe installing a leak is the same as rooting. My point is that it is not.

Well yes. Looks like we are on the same page then. In fact it appears that it is possible to root from OTA right now actually. Leaks still have no such luck.
There sure are a lot of people confused on the difference between root and leak though.
Hopefully my earlier post will help steer someone right.

EVERYONE LISTEN.
the ORA is different than the v1 v2 v3 leaks trust me. WHY? They added a few different things like friend steam gallery and a few tweaks. ALL LEAK users WILL get the update in some time or the other. Either through your phone or manually updating (as we know the current manual update does not work for leaks) but will eventually be modified to work for leaks...I am 100% sure of this because of the mast majority of leak users. :D Thanks hope this helps so confusion.

Yep. Root has officially been done on an OTA phone.

Sorry. I hate to tell you since you are 100% sure of yourself, but you are completely wrong.

Actually, I think you might be the one confused.

I'm in the fortunate position to have one phone running the 2.1v3 leak and one running the 2.1 OTA. They are absolutely identical in every way I can possibly find. All of the software info is the same, all of the apps are the same, and even the bugs are the same. There is no Friend Stream (which has already been discussed), and there are no differences to maps or a 3D gallery to speak of. So, unless you have some sort of information that nobody knows about, you are a little off base.

Of course, over time people will find a way to "update" the leaks to the OTA version, but to be quite honest there's no reason for anyone running v3 to sweat getting the OTA, unless they are concerned with rooting for one reason or another.

You are right. Hopefully everyone will disregard that person's post.
