Official 2.1 Release Disappointments

I may be the only one this is happening too but the official 2.1 release is running very sluggish on my moment. Also I am not too concerned about live papers(although they would be nice), but where is the updated gallery and multi-touch zoom. The DROID got both with its update, do the custom roms support multi-touch or is that impossible on this phone?

Unless Samsung snuck in multi touch drivers with the final release (they weren't there in the beta's), there's little chance this phone will ever see multi touch. For me, after Samsung/Sprint screwed the pooch with the initial cl14 release (no one should have to go to a store to update in 2005, much less 2010) I felt that this update had to be a home run to change my feelings about Samsung. Instead, they hit a solid single. This is my first Samsung phone. It's apparent to me that when compared to its competitors, Samsung applies very little resources to released devices. What's not clear to me is if it's just the Moment or a general throw it out in the marketplace and forget it policy. I think that is why we don't have the added home screens, Gallery, live wallpaper, etc. . With multi touch, I don't know if Samsung didn't want to do the work or if they lack the balls to confront Apple, probably a combination of both. Fortunately, the other Android based device makers like HTC and Motorola aren't like Samsung eunuchs. DE03 is good, but not good enough for me to consider Samsung for the Moments replacement or beyond.

the moment does support double tap to zoom now. I too am wondering why the picture gallery interface isn't updated like it should be on 2.1

I honestly think they put little to NO effort porting 2.1 to this phone, some of the MAJOR issues that were present in previous versions still exist AND not to metion this is just plain vanilla android with absolutely nothing special. Samsung is stretching their resourses too thin with the different phones coming out (most of it probly going to the galaxy S). Everytime i see the news on a new samsung phone running 2.1 on it it makes me believe it more and more, they just dont care about this phone. I don't even know we will see a maintenance fix for the issues that exist in 2.1.

On a side note you CAN download the 3d gallery.APK on SDX and it works perfectly fine.

My update ( I was on previous releases and leaks, but I am official again for now) was easy and I thought the phone was performing incredibly fast, so it sounds like something went wrong on your update.

I noticed that a few things have changed with 2.1 that I had gotten used to with 1.5 (CL14).

First, the screen now times out when the phone is plugged in. This makes it less than useful as an MP3 player in the car, of for using Google Listen for podcasts in the car. You can't even hit pause without a whole lot of keystrokes now.

Second (and somewhat related), when I have the Moment plugged into my car audio system using a stereo mini connection, you can't hear inbound calls via Bluetooth anymore. The audio doesn't route like it used to.

Can anyone else confirm these issues? I'm not sure if I can say that they are "bugs", or that the phone just works differently now.

Mentioned in the release notes:
"Increased speed and performance"

I see absolutely no performance increases, in fact, ever since the first beta 2.1 leak, I've seen nothing but a decrease in performance. Swiping between homescreens, for example, is like a freakin choppy mess. Youtube in HQ has slight hiccups here and there, still present in DE03.

I had forgotten that I had to set the screen timeout in Cupcake, too. I completely forgot about that setting!

As for the Bluetooth problem, I'll have test this again. I'm not 100% sure if it's actually doing this, or if it was some other random problem that I was having that day.

The screen timeout problem was the bigger problem for me. I don't talk on the phone much when I'm in the car.

I can tell you that Pandora is finally usable. That's an increase for me, but YMMV. It does seem faster to me. Stuff that used to lag is better.

Thats strange... I just recently flashed DE03 and after several reboots, I think it runs fantastic... Swing over to SDX-developers.com and see if they can suggest anything... They're super helpful.

I gotta admit, I am very impressed with DE03, overall... They did a nice job balancing the usability with the limitations of the hardware. To answer a few questions with some 'rumor' info...

1) Multi-touch: This is currently patented by Apple. Everyone that is making money with multi-touch is getting sued. I don't see anyone besides HTC adding this to devices anytime soon.

2) Flan Gallery: I got the APK on this and I can tell you why it was left out - SLUGGISH!

3) Bluetooth Audio: The routing was changed, and for good reason. If you played with an early build (DD03 etc...) you'd know why. Bluetooth audio was horrible on the leaks. Time to bite the bullet and pay $300 for a bluetooth audio interface or a new deck.

Any other questions, I'll do my best to get answers.

HTC is more then likely going to loose to apple... samsung is more then likely waiting to see if this does happen and how bad it is... Why expose yourself to a lawsuit if you know you probably cant win?

Multi touch is only one of many filings, most or all of which Samsung has exposer. It's also extremely unlikely in these cases will ever see open court. As the suits fly back and forth and legal costs mount, they'll eventually come to licensing agreements. In the end, the only winners are the lawyers. I'm totally guessing here, but I think Samsung's decision to omit multi touch has less to do about lawsuit and more to do about resources. That is if the phone is even capable. Of course, Samsung could clear it up by saying if the phone is capable, but that would necessitate communication.

A few(mostly good) things I've noticed about about DE03 with regards to Bluetooth:

With my phone sync'd to my car, it no longer works as a BT audio player through the car. Phone only.
Connection between devices seems faster, I used to get halfway down the block before my phone connected, now it happens before I'm out of the driveway.
Contact transfer via BT is cleaned up and goes much smoother
The button on my BT headset now triggers voice dialing, a big oversight in CJ05 and CL14.

I did the update and the phone slowed down a ton. Going from screen to screen is choppy. I waited a few days to see if their was any diffrence but the phone sux now imo. Another problem i have had is the battery life is now crap. Stock 14 i was gettin 3 days average use. Joeykrim's rooted i was gettin a week or more. With this i am getting about a day. The only reason i like it now is the voice to text feature.
