My phone actually is connected to the internet now all i got to do is put hotspot tethering on and then the phone it self connects to the internet like using online apps on the phone i mean and not the wifi tethering.

otherwise if hotspot is off there is no internet connection for the phone it self to use the online apps.

If i bypass the data limit i will let you guys know.

you dont need to download a 60gb file to find out if you have bypassed the tethering limit. if the tethering allowance is going down then it hasn't worked.

Hey guys,

So I think I may have found a way around the issue for people on Three. I have a rooted S7 so not 100% sure if this will work on stock phones but I dont see why not. Simple steps ...

1. Settings > Access Point Names
2. I use the default access point with the name "3" not "3 Hotspot"
3. Go to edit the point and scroll down to "APN type'
4. Just add ",dun" to the end and hit ok - (so for example will look like "default, supl, mms, dun")
5. Reboot phone and you should now have unlimited tethering!

Just as a note, the first time I tried this on the rooted device I used an app called "ISWAT Tether Unblocker" first then went on to step 2 above. Doubt that it would have changed much as I have flashed other roms and just followed the above steps without the app. I have been tethering laptops and tablets with no problem :)

Hope this works for you!

Hey
is this still working?

I solved this by creating a new apn. the name was thr33. just to make sure i was selecting the right one from the list when i change it.

in the new apn, put in three.co.uk

this should work. if it doesnt you need to connect the phone to using abd and use the command

settings put global tether_dun_required 0

this causes the phone to not create another interface when tethering is activated, therefore three cannot see the data requests coming in over another connection (which three can count, and block)

this has worked for me on several devices and since the removal of the one plan in january 2016, i have never 'used' my 4gb tethering allowance.

I am here as Three seem to recognise my tether usage now. Before I got the Xperia Z3 for Christmas (using Xperia Z beforehand) I used to be able to use unlimited tethering for years (as in 2013-14 I was on the One Plan with legit unlimited tethering) but since I've got the new phone the network has recognised my usage and I've now used my 2.5gb allowance in a day.

I believe it's either because, A: when I put the new SIM in I had to activate it thus resetting the 'glitch' of unlimited tethering (may have carried on from the One Plan)
OR
B: Marshmallow on the Z3 allows Three to track my usage but Lollipop on my Z doesn't send data usage stats.

My only options are that I get a SIM adaptor and put it in my Z hoping I can tether on that which I plan on doing first, or I try to bypass the limit through rooting and changing APN settings (can I do it without root? I'd prefer that) OR I buy a wireless broadband router from EE as I can't get wired broadband in my area and make do with a limited allowance...

Apologies for the long post but I'm a bit gutted as this is my only source of getting internet onto other devices. Any answers would be greatly appreciated Thanks...

I will try the APN setting but my stock access point already shows me connected to three.co.uk (image attatched) and the other problem is getting SDK onto the computer as I've used my data allowance. Might have to download on my phone and USB it over. Im going to have to try this all tomorrow as I've no time for it tonight...

well you have enough information to try it at your leisure, you're welcome :)

Hi all.

I'm having some trouble - I'm having to tether off a three PAYG sim (yes, I know, 'technically' not allowed but I don't really have much option!) as I'm without internet thanks to BT delaying my installation constantly. I didn't want to pay for a rolling contract, so went with the £25 jobby from three.

It's been working the last couple of days great, but today its slowed to an absolute crawl in the afternoon. My setup is tethering off an Android Moto G phone with the appropriate tethering setting disabled via adb, as a usb WAN to a router running OpenWRT. Worked great - except all the devices going through the router are now painfully slow. Did a speed check on the phone to compare and thats as normal. Tried it running devices off the wifi hotspot on the phone, too - same problem. Devices slow, phone fine. So I'm guessing this means I've been caught out and the internet has been throttled?

What I'm asking is - is there any workaround to this, can I 'beat' the throttle so that my traffic is more convincingly phone-only?

try creating a new apn call it thr33
in the apn field type in ' three.co.uk ' dont enter anything else.
try again.

Hey, thanks for that, I've set that up but it didn't seem to have any effect. As soon as it hit 3pm the slowdown hits!

On my phone I get 6ish Mbps DL / 2 Mbps UL, on my phone between 0.2-0.4 Mbps DL and a variable UL, it went as high as 1 but around the 0.5 Mbps UL seems standard.

I understand that these networks employ different things like looking at the TTL value and DPI, would upping this value to one higher than my phone and running my traffic through a VPN have any effect?

I've been doing some digging - I noticed something was strange when the Three IP I was given on my desktop and other tethered devices was different to the one on my phone...

When tethering is on, there are three 'network interfaces' at play on the phone. Without tethering on, there's just one really that we're concerned with - 'rmnet0' - which is the connection to three. When tethering comes on, however, two are created - 'rndis0' which is the interface that deals with the internal tethered network that it sets up (192.168.42.x range) BUT an additional rmnet interface - 'rmnet1' then appears with a different internal (on the 10.x.x.x range) and external three IP address to rmnet0.

You guessed it, anything tethered goes through rndis0, and everything on that interface gets forwarded to this newly created rmnet1 interface which, during the 3pm-midnight hours, is painfully slow.

I'm looking into what I can do to change this by altering the iptables but this is a bit beyond my skillset. I'll report anything I can find out.
