Good to know but note the OP for this thread is NOT asking for help on recovering deleted files, it's a matter of possible microSD card corruption. Recovering deleted files is a different issue than fixing problematic storage media, and utilities that do one are not the necessarily the same as the other.

Recuva claims to do both. But I also linked to others. The point is that there are lots of applications out there that claim to be able to fix the very problem the OP faces so he should try some.

Yes, but some of the the techniques and software for recovering deleted files may also work with corrupt data.

Another place to look for Android friendly data recovery software is EaseUS.

Regardless of what some utilities claim they can do, it's still a matter of two different situations that don't overlap.
File recovery essentially is a matter where a 'deleted' file gets some bits in the file itself changed from 'deleted' back to 'saved'. A deleted file doesn't disappear off its storage media, it's simply a status change for the file itself, before it was 'invisible' and then it's 'visible'. A file recovery utility scans a drive for specific file patterns, and when it indexes a listing of them you can pick the ones that will hopefully be savable.
Storage media repair utilities on the other hand need to work on the actual storage media at a very low level. It's not a matter of flipping bits in a file from one state to another, the actual file structure of the disk needs to be fixed. If it's actual physical damage to the media than it won't even be repairable. Also, note that a microSD card is very susceptible to damage -- the outer shell is not durable and FAT32, their default file system, is by far not the most robust file system so the risk of physical damage is higher than average and even a minor mistake in general usage can cause a problem.

My problem with this is, a search for "recover photos android" comes up with about 1,000,000 sites loaded with adware and downloads containing virus. Some of which may have been linked to in this thread.
Note that all of these sites are for Windows programs. This is what makes me sick about the Windows OS. Not just the fact that it seems to be forever stuck on DOS, but the bloodsucking, take advantage of people's misfortunes culture that has grown around it.

In my experience fsck as is will balk at FAT (or FAT32, or xFAT) drives. The dosfstools package needs to be installed and then use dosfsck or maybe the fsck.vfat command.

Thanks for clarifying. I was not aware of the fsck/fat compatibility. Also pointing to a potential spam post in this thread. I consider spammers and those that include Malware in there programs as 1 step above protozoa on the evolutionary scale. I did some checking, btw. Free virus with every download.


To the OP, whose username is so convoluted I could not possibly tag it, have you tried taking any pictures since this happened? That could rule out the possibility of a malfunctioning camera, which can be cheaply and easily replaced.

Hey everyone, I am new here and am having a SD card issue. When I go to the gallery of my phone and go to the SD card Camera section, all my photos will show up as thumbnails, but when I click on the photo...well it comes up all gibberished and mashed together with gray or tan lines blocking out half of the photo. Is there anyway to recover my stuff? All my photos in that album are from our vacation, and are very important to us. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Happened to me too but when i view it on my PC, it's all okay. I think just transfer it on other device/PC and see if it's still like that.

I think that what is on your phone are thumbnails. They would probably be in a .db file.

Those things are tiny. I don't have any info on a program that would make them larger since pixels don't work that way.

Since you have a Samsung phone, why don't you see if Samsung has some kind of app for your camera that might reload these thumbs as originals? It would have to be from your phone and your camera.
