Why only 1G Memory?

OK, please don't slam. Yes this is my 1st post and I am a Verizon customer with and Incredible but after using the Inc in the real world for a couple weeks, I needed to ask the question.
My phone came with 8GB internal memory but preinstalled apps (which can't be removed) took up about 1/2 a gig. I have many friends on Sprint, all who will be getting the EVO but all who don't wish to install/run apps from an SD card. Is anyone concerned or question why the evo has such limited internal storage for such a obvious monster of a phone?
I mean Sprint is charge an extra $10 bucks because of all the data they "anticipate" being used but my question is where are you going to put it all :).

The Incredible came with 512MB of ROM and 8GB of "internal memory" that acts as a glorified permanent SD Card I believe.

The Evo will have 1GB ROM, but no other "internal memory".

The amount of ROM is important (more so than the "internal memory") because you can only install applications onto the ROM, and not the "Internal memory".

I think that's at least right - somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

that is correct. and also, the more ROM you have leads to ulimately having a faster device.

FYI - There's been absolutely NO confirmation on "internal storage" on the EVO yet. 1GB ROM and 512MB RAM, 8gb microsd included (can go up to 32gb).

This is actually VERY important to me. I want the extra internal storage and I'm hoping that the EVO will at least match the incredible (which as 8gb internal + slot for microSD).

since sprint is including an 8gb mircosd car. i highly doubt it has 8gb internal storage.

hmm i've been totally confused about this then. i thought "saving apps to rom" meant like hdd space for apps. now you're saying the apps are saved to the gig of rom and the stuff for movies and music is completely different?

i'm guessing that means the incredible has 8gb of crap space + micro sd card and the evo gets zero crap space + micro sd card? howd we get so shafted on that one? im assuming the evo gets zero because i think it would have otherwise been mentioned by now.

The 8GB internal on the Incredible is nice, but seriously crippled. Essentially zero third-party applications are currently able to either read or write to that space. So if you want to use an upgraded music player, then you can't put songs on the internal memory. Want to use a cool gallery app you found in the market? Then you can't put pictures on internal memory. Same with videos, docs, etc., etc. Even some of HTC's own apps can't use the internal memory.

Until third-party app developers re-write their programs to use that space, its value is seriously degraded. Will that happen? Yes, for some developers. However, right now the Incredible is the only popular Android phone in North America with the internal memory. So its likely this won't necessarily be high on the priority list for some developers.

So if I had to choose between 1GB ROM or 8GB internal storage, I'll take the ROM upgrade 10 times out of 10.

my Hero only has 512mb ROM; 288mb RAM; and an 8GB sd card. it runs pretty damn good.. and i have tons of apps loaded; and room for more.

Of the 512mb ROM, only 161mb of it is available for me to load apps. I am guess the other is used for the OS and what it needs. I use A2sd to move as much of the apps to my SDcard. EVO will have 1GB; this will be great and with A2sd, I dont see it being much of an issue till bigger apps are available for android. Most android apps are very small!!! compared to Windows or apple.

the consumption of data with EVO will be more online data. This includes video and audio streaming. this type of data, is not really stored on the phone (it might be cached, then deleted by the OS). watching a 5GB movie, does not mean that the 5gb will be on the phone!! You can listen to Internet radio all day; use 3GB of music...; and only have less than 1mb of cached data on your phone at any given time. So in 1 month of high demand of data/audio/video; you can use over 20GB of data, but it will not be be saved on your phone.

So I'm perfectly clear, I am not bashing you or the Evo. I am not a Incredible messiah here to rain on anyones parade. Just trying to get answers for some friends who plan to purchase the phone.
I understand the point you are making but the comparison you are making confuses me. You don't have to choose. The incredible has both. It's not as if the Inc. has a substandard ROM, it will be second only to the evo by less than 1/4 (1000MB / 768MB) and that crap space is important to many smart phone users.
I obviously have the Inc. and can tell you without a doubt that all HTC applications accept the data from the internal memory and SD card seamlessly. I have pics, video and music on both and when you run via the built in app you would never know they are stored in different places. You may certainly be correct regarding the third party stuff but I'm just asking why not put it on the Evo too?
I'm not a big fan of the front facing camera but would love the bigger screen and hdmi out. I have not held or played with the evo so I can't say if it's too big, etc but both phones are obviously fantastic. Just wondering why remove something espically since it's a later release than the Incredible. What not make it more incredible :)

I agree with you... It would have been nice if they also gave EVO the 8GB .. extra storage... what is the added cost?? <$10???

but maybe they are saving that idea for the EVO 2..
