Interesting that HD video streaming is included in the Verizon plan. AT&T, Sprint, and T-mobile all compress video to 480p.

EDIT: T-Mobile announced they will be matching/beating Verizons offer.

Their press release says it's an "introductory plan," what are the odds they repeat history by removing their unlimited plan soon and spend the next 5 years trying to force users to something else?

I suspect they will stick with it because they have to be competitive.

IE ATT offers a version of unlimited also - so VZ became the only one without. Notice it's throttled after some 22 gb just like the ATT system. OR potentially throttled - depending on traffic demand where you are. Also I think they see the writing on the way for moving to 5th gen network systems. (IE the replacement for LTE)

I chatted online with them today, it doesn't make much sense for me to switch since I'm on an older plan. I get 30GB for 6 lines for $225, we use anywhere from 5-25GB per month. The new unlimited plan would be about $250. Here's the kicker though, and something to be aware of, the price on the site when I went through the upgrade/change steps was less. My current per line charge is $15. It showed the per line price for the new plan as $20 but it was crossed out and had it as $15. I'm really sort of tempted to change my plan and fight them with screenshots when they point out it's wrong. But I know I'd lose and couldn't go back to what I have now. Just be careful when clicking, the site may not actually be right!

I asked about the "introductory price", he said that that was the price and there is no plan that he knows of to change it. He said they always use that phrase for new plans, as in - introductory plan so introductory price. We'll see about that.

Also, keep in mind that you lose any discounts you currently get. The only thing you do get is $10 off if you autopay (from your bank, not a credit card) and go paperless. No more employee type discounts to take advantage of.

De-Prioritization =/= Throttling

Just because you're over the 22GB barrier does NOT mean they will be throttling you. Infact, throttle would imply that they could give you faster speeds, but choose not to. They mention that you would only experience lower speeds when the towers are CONGESTED. When a tower is congested that means it does not have enough bandwidth to pass around - therefore you are in line last for data if you are over 22GB. That is NOT throttling. Please stop with the misinformation and fear mongering.

For all of Verizon's warts, and they are many, this^^^ is true and I think a fair way to do network management.

I don't care how you want to slice the words around they are going to slow down your stream. Now to be fair I see no issues with any network that does a version of EITHER if they advertise the limit and let you know when you get there. IE I should see minimal issues or none at the first of the month - but hey over here on day 27 and my little meter show I'm at X+ useage and golly it takes another second or so to buffer this or google search to return that.

Yeah that's extremely valid. I'm currently a VZ customer. TO be fair they seem to have always treated me well but I know I pay a premium mostly for those days I drive out to nowheresville.

use whatever verb choice makes you feel better but when needed they will slow you down - hell if the tower is clogged up 22gb or not your stream is probably going to be slowed down anyway the pathway is only so big.

Now going out there and modifying your delivered content provided you are using someone they have an agreement with and giving you less res or sound quality because they control what you can get - no I don't like that at all.

No, and it is a clear difference. Other carrier say you reach X data, you only get 3G speed. On Verizon you will only have your speed reduced if you are over a certain threshold, are on a crowded tower when it is crowded, and will only be slowed to a speed necessary to allow others that haven't consumed above the threshold to enjoy the fastest experience possible while the tower is crowded. If you are lucky enough to be the only person using a particular tower you could use terrabytes of data and never see a slowdown.

De-prioritization after 20GB+ is pretty common on unlimited data plans right now. I believe most carriers and MVNOs have some sort of de-prioritization clause when on busy towers.

Grandfather finally flipped his unlimited data plan to the new unlimited everything. Talk text and data. The price per month decreased the same amount extra my device payment was. Now big red is paying for my LG v20 and when they are done, my bill goes down. Still feel like I got took somehow though.

My biggest issue - I lose my corporate discount if I move - and I can't go back to the plan I was on - therefore I would be out more money per month to go unlimited. so I don't need to

I go Unlimited because I have a unique situation.

I'm still living with my parents (moving out in may) and they want to charge me 30 a month to share their internet... But they get mad when I download things and they always blame me for problems that they have.

So I would just rather have my own internet and since they already have wired internet, I can't call Comcast and get a modem put in the house for me.

I have used 35GB so far and still no slowdowns.

I just got an interesting deal. 5GB to reduced priority, unlimited. $4 more than my ancient 6GB plan grandfathered from the old unlimited. With $5 off if I use auto pay. Which I did because I now have a flat rate.

I use my tablet as a hotspot for my computer. When I reach 22 GB, will I be hard capped or just deprioritized, like normal mobile use?

Mobile hotspot/tethering will be reduced to 3G speeds after 10GB of data. The 22GB is for mobile data and will be deprioritized only if the tower you are on is congested at that very moment.

I gave up the old grandfathered unltd. It saves me money and puts 2 of my lines back on unlimted. 2 were still on and 2 were off. Win-win.

I'm getting throttled really bad. There is no way my remote tower is overloaded to the point that it takes thirty seconds to respond to a DNS request. In the middle of the night.

After using 5GB. Down to text only. If a page has an image, it won't load.

I'm up around 10gb and haven't been throttled once. I am using my old phone (HTC m8) at home on Wi-Fi. Saves probably 15gb a month of mobile data. Use the LG v20 as my mobile device. So far so good without grandfather unlimited. And paying $30 less per month.

I gave up after 45 minutes. It stalled at 9/14ths of the way.

I called Verizon. They gave me a $15 credit for an extra GB.

If I turn off Safe Mode before hitting the limit, GBs are only $10.

The individual plan throttles to 128 kbps the second you go over 5 GB. The My Verizon app won't even load so you can buy more data.

They put me back on my old plan. 6 GB max grandfathered from the old unlimited. I didn't think they could do that.

Got a great CSR. She knew exactly what was going on.

I switched to this too. I had given up the unlimited plan way back and taken up the 6GB max plan. Then I gave that up as I only had 450 anytime minutes and 250 texts per month with that plan and took the "new verizon" plan with unlimited talk and text with 4 GB data last year when they went to the streamlined plans of small, medium, large etc. That was costing me $40 per month for the data as I got a discount on it through my employer. "Upgrading" to the new 5GB plan for single lines is saving me money as it is only $50 pr month and with my discount only costs me $32. Then I get the $5 additional for going paperless and using automated billing which I have already been doing for years. And it keeps the data roll over too. As I don't ever use nearly 5 GB of data a month this is great for me.
If you are not a huge data user and only need a single line this really is a good choice.
