Welcome to the new AndroidForums (Round 2)

@kate Yeah, The carrier stuff will resolve soon. We've yet to migrate those and when we do it'll hopefully get fixed at that point. The duplcate built in apps .. that's something we need to figure out. Maybe we should just hide those from web view. I assume they are device specific and eveyrone with that same device would have the same channel so, in that regard, it's good. But, it's confusing otherwise.
@Phases, see my reply just before yours. I agree that most of those would be the same for samsung. Is there a way to infer (Samsung in package name) or manually name the channel without breaking too much stuff?

With all due respect.. The best idea would be to remove the device's apks from being seen/read by the AF.apk and website as it's useless and frustrating for everyone involved. We kinda already know what apps we have installed..

The idea isn't to tell you what apps you have installed, but rather to make it easy to communicate with other users of those apps.

Ex: I have a question about how to use the Google app. Rather than having to navigate through a tree, I can jump straight to the Google channel to post there.

This saves users the trouble of trying to figure which general forum a question/comment about a particular app/game should go in. Just go straight to the channel for that app and instantly communicate with other users of that app. It also means that each user won't have to see a bunch of posts about obscure apps they're not interested in.

It's a very different approach which may take some getting used to, but I'm actually rather enjoying the new organization scheme. :)

Yes ... that's the upside.

The downside is that you do not find out about other possibilities that you had not considered and other apps you ahd not considered.

I was introduced that way to ...
3C Toolbox Pro – paid – enhanced version
A+ Gallery Phots & Videos – organizer for photos and videos
Barcode Scanner – scan barcodes (including QR codes) and save data
CallX – automatic call recorder (not for Verizon advanced calling)
chompSMS – subscription – the best messaging app I have ever used
Multi Stopwatch & Timer – complete stopwatch and time facility
Nova Launcher Prime – paid – replace vendor launcher – backup/restore settings
TeslaUnread (Nova) – free – display counts on icons needing action
Pixel Phone Pro – paid – phone/contacts finally done right
Poweranp Music Player trial – trial – professional music player/equalizer
QR Droid Code Scanner – create QR Code for various purposes
RealCalc – trial –customizable calculator – RPN option and bin/oct/dec/hex
Reverse Lookup – look-up information about caller from their phone number
SD Maid – System Cleaning – trial – remove junk from SD cards – free version
Smart Tools – paid – collection of very interesting and very useful measurement tools
Solid Explorer File Manager – manipulate device folders and files
SwiftKey Keyboard – keyboard replacement … it predicts what you are going to type
Tasker – paid – complete automation facility
Tasker App Factory – free – convert Tasker script to .APK file
Textra SMS – messaging
VoiceX – voice Recorder – Dictaphone
Weather Underground – paid – weather report, history, and predictions
X-plore File Manager – manipulate device and cloud folders and files

I heard about them first by bumping into them on Android Forums and recommend them to everyone.

There is a need for both approach's.

... Thom

Ohhhhh, I'm starting to maybe understand the Channel concept slightly based on the posts from @codesplice and @Unforgiven .

So is this something that can only be experienced via the app? Cuz that would make a lot of sense why I've been scratching my head as I've always used mobile Chrome or the desktop for AF use.

The app makes it quicker to start a thread about a device/app on your phone.

With a browser you can still create new posts in a device/app channel but you have to navigate to that channel first, similar to the old setup where you went to the Galaxy S7 forum first then created a new thread about the S7.

Now each app has their own channel (formally forum) in addition to phones.

I feel like I'm the dumb kid who never gets it but just to shore this all up then...is there such a thing as a forum here at AF then? Or is everything I see now called a channel?

There are still forums. All of the former device forums are now channels under the Android Devices forum. I think I saw that the site went from thousands of sub forums to less than 100, so a huge reduction. Many of those subs are now represented as channels.

New app channels are created automagically by people posting about an app from the new forum app. So from the web we can't (at this point as far as I know) create a new channel. We can create new threads in an existing channel.

I think there is a behind the scenes approval process for device channels as I worked with @stevealbright to get the new schema to recognize my Kindle Fire and get a channel for it.

Its finally clear. Thanks @codesplice @Unforgiven @kate for the info. My light bulb moment may only involve 20 watts, but it finally turned on. :D

You know what phases, just forget it. It's not the end of the world. I'LL live. I was just trying to point out what I thought was a glitch. But, it seems I am the only one experiencing it, so, it doesn't matter.
No, you're not alone.. I was getting them too until I went into AF profile Settings on browser and disabled near everything except like 2 boxes (PM's & quotes). Now the apk doesn't go nuts all day. [emoji41]

The apk? The app? That has notification settings you can disable, in its settings, if you like.
Yes, but that's an "all or nothing" switch.. Needed to go into website/settings to specify which ones I wanted. Fortunately an easy fix.. The apk settings (in the future) might do well to reflect the notification capabilities of the website. Just a thought, not critical..

The 'last post' functionality is a must for forum browsing for me. Again, I would not have known it was added or updated to work correctly unless it had been mentioned by you great guys.

I am noticing that I am not getting the hyperlink on the timestamp UNLESS I am actively logged in. This is consistent across browsers and devices.
This is a similar issue as I noticed with the blue dot. The blue dot is only present when logged in. I see how the blue dot is dependent upon log in, as that is how it tracks which posts you (your particular individual log in) have or have not read.

I believe that the 'last post' hyperlink on the timestamp has no reason to be trapped behind a 'log-in'. I'd love to see this function available all the time, especially when browsing not logged in.

Thanks a million!!!
Seriously, one thanks is not enough

Had an odd occurrence today when logging in. I was prompted to confirm my account...
Im not sure if this ensued after something you guys have been working on or if it was something I did. I entered an incorrect username with a correct password - once, not a multi attempt lockout.

Directly after the huge security concerns a few years ago I nuked my email address from the site here and left the field blank.

It looks like special characters and emoticons aren't rendering properly in quotes.

PS: I verified that the frown was :( and not an attached image. :(

I think I brought this up in V1 and if it was acknoledged, then IBT can slap me with a trout. :D

Anyway, forum messages don't seem to be displayed in the app anywhere that I can see. At least not prominenly enough for what they are used for.

I'm talking about the ones you use to announce forum downtime or the discontinuation of TT.
