wifi/data

Hello, I’ve a problem that I hope you can help me with. I have read the whole manual for my phone and talked with my network provider. I cannot find ‘data enabled’ (and therefore how to turn it off). Is ‘mobile data on’ the same thing?

All I wanted basically was to use my moto as a phone BUT with the possibility of searching online if I had to. I am not technically savvy enough to have understood that ‘wifi’ and ‘data’ are different. The result is that while I had turned off wifi, the data, (I guess) must have been eating up the allowance (aka money) so I have had to pay for data (?) that I didn’t know anything about.

If I turn ‘mobile data’ to ‘off’ and am NOT using wifi, will this mean that I only pay for phone calls/texts?

If I keep ‘mobile data’ ‘off’ and turn ON wifi, will I be able to get on the internet?

Currently, all I can do is make and receive calls. I have received text but my text responses are not sent.

Can you help or point me in the right direction? I love the phone but my ignorance is driving me crazy! Thanks, denise

Hi Denise,

Welcome to Android Forums.

I'm not familiar with the Moto G4 Play, but having read through the User Guide :-

http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/motorola-moto-g4-play-manual-setup-guide

I can't see a mobile data 'switch' but there is a 'WiFi' switch and my understanding is that if WiFi is switched ON then mobile date is switched OFF and the 'data indicator' doesn't appear in the notification bar and to use the internet you connect to your router.

If you then turn WiFi OFF, mobile data is switched ON, and the 'data indicator' shows in the notification bar indicating the speed of connection and you can use the internet with your mobile data allowance.

From this it seems that you need to leave WiFi ON unless and until you want or need to use mobile data. The only downside to this is the slight drain on the battery.

Hope this helps. If not then hopefully a Moto G4 Play user will chime in.

How kind of you to take the time to reply. I will try it, but it looks as if I can have wifi and mobile data both on.Currently, I am keeping mobile data off! I am not topping up anymore, so with 31p in the account, I can't connect anyway. I am considering changing to giff gaff. I am frustrated, but honestly, I am sure it is just me and my ignorance. I have read the moto 4G play manual from beginning to end. Under settings/data usage is 'mobile data', so that is what I have turned off. Once again, I appreciate your time, dee

That should do it, your mobile data is off now. You can turn wifi on if you want, it won't interfere with the mobile data at all.
You may have issues (as you noted before) with messaging though, SMS (regular text to 1 person) should be OK but MMS (pictures or group texts) do need data to be on.
