Can you flash a custom kernel without rooting?

No first put ur phone into the pc type adb reboot bootloader then type in fastboot oem unlock then fastboot reboot then reboot back into the bootloader then flash the twrp image the flash super su in twrp then flash the custom kernel

Hey guys, can I use the "N5_4.4.4_KTU84P_LEAN.zip" file in TWRP to go from Nexus 5 Hammerhead running Android OS 4.4.2? Will it keep my root/pictures?

When flashing do I just do an install from inside TWRP Recovery (v3.2.1.1)?

How can I get to the latest version of Lollipop? Can I use that file and then go to the latest version of Android that my phone will run or a custom rom?

Are there other custom roms still out there?

I have been out of the scene for a while now because my Google Nexus 5 (Hammerhead running Android OS 4.4.4 with TWRP and rooted w/Titanium Backup) has been running excellent since 2015!

But now... since Thanksgiving of this year (2018) I've had to put up with the non-stop error message "Unfortunately, the android.process.acore has stopped"!!! Ad infinitum!!

I tried everything to fix that up until yesterday and then I did a factory reset and then I restored my previous full phone TWRP back up (1.68 GB in size) that I made back in 2014... and I forgot that it was version 4.4.2 of KitKat. Ughh! So now I'm stuck in this version but I still have root and everything seems to be running great again!

At least that error is gone and i can open up my Contacts without it crashing with that error.

So can someone help me move up in the world with my Nexus 5 and get another year or so out of it?

What are the latest, fastest custom/stock roms that are still out there? And in development or recently was finalized?

Sure, no problem! In fact, you can also install Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo on that device now. Just don't forget to add gapps (Google Apps) from opengapps.org and make sure you choose the PKG you would like (aroma seems very buggy tho..) for the OS you have installed. There are many ROMs available for that device but of course I'm gonna plug for BlissROM at https://blissroms.github.io .. go to downloads section and Oreo folder, then look up hammerhead. As for SuperSu: it's severely outdated and may actually be discontinued so I advise full wipe and reflash with Magisk instead of SuperSu if you run into any problems. Yes, install everything via TWRP.. Flash order:
- ROM
- SuperSu or Magisk
- Gapps of choice (Nano seems great, less bloat)

Yep, after I posted this I started thinking about custom roms. I've downloaded the CM13 (CyanogenMod)(Hammerhead)) rom with the open Gapps (207 mb).

I saw where they (Cyanogenmod) have went up to CM 15 (Oreo?) or CM 16?

So what do you think about the LineageOS roms?

Do you mind hooking me up with links and the link to your favorite rom? I had a time trying to find CM13.

I didn't think this old Nexus 5 could run the latest and greatest Android versions.

How is the speed?

I knew that the N5 was powerful when it was released but I wouldn't have guessed that it could run the latest (or almost) and best Android OS.

Do I run Magisk on my PC? I've forgotten how to ADB/Sideload! Ahhhh! I've downloaded the PC app called "FWUL" to help me with fastboot. I just need a blank USB stick for that PC program.

CM has been rebranded as LineageOS due to some legal issues from a deal gone bad. But both are customizable via the newer theme engines and Substratum. As for most options: you'll have to try them and see which suits your desires/needs best

What I need is a rom that I can use every day and one that is ready to go as is.

I just flash it with TWRP, install my gapps then root and then go. This is my only phone.

What is stable enough and has everything working? I looked on xda and some roms need a different radio, a different camera, etc. I really don't want to have to mess with anything like that.
