Have you ever tried this camera? I've bought it on eBay yesterday but today I've read some topics about this camera in which people talks about the new firmware block outside mainland China. Is there anyone who use this camera?

The only usage notes I've seen about this camera are here, for when using outside of China.

** Mi Home APP must be set to Chinese Mainland Locale and English language.

** For 4G/3G connectivity you will need a Xiaomi router or the Camera will only run in WiFi home mode.

My thoughts are, if you're not actually in China would you really want to be using a security/CCTV camera that depends on and communicates with servers in the PRC?

I know but it seems a very good camera for the price. But let me explain. I was searching for outdoor cameras and I can't easily do the wiring stuff to bring electricity and other things like the LAN cable. Now, I was searching for too long on Amazon and other, and there are a lot of ip cameras which are not even real 720p and costs about 70/80 Euros (I'm in Italy but are like approximately 80$ too ). I knew also about the Arlo cameras but they costs too much (about 300 for two cameras and the router). This camera instead was really known in this period and it has a really low price. I've bought on eBay ( months of waiting from gearbest and other that doesn't ship in Italy) for 20€ and with a ebay offered coupon in the end it cost to me only 5€. So I thought that it should be something to try or am I wrong?

This camera is 1080p and it's for outdoors purposes ( in front of the garage). It could be keep connected with WiFi and a powerbank so a completely stand alone camera.

For the outdoors problem ( rain and other stuff ) I've a 3d printer in the department and I can print a cover designed specifically for it.

There is also an hack script for this camera on github which allows to do other transmission protocols like ssh, rtsp etc https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks/blob/master/README.md

The only problem is this last country lock made by Xiaomi ( I'm trying to get this camera for months and it's a recent limitation they introduce ).

For your last observation, you believe that is not safe to use xiaomi servers in PRC?

I'm thinking about availability, reliability and sufficient bandwidth actually. I'm actually in China, and I do know for a fact that internet bandwidth in and out of China is often not the best to say the least. I often use a VPN to watch YouTube, which is otherwise blocked, and quite frequently there's just insufficient bandwidth to stream full 1080p HD video. I was in the UK very recently and any mainland PRC sites I browsed, like TaoBao, seemed very slow compared to when I'm in China.
