Help Transferring/backing up data

Smart Switch works remarkably well for moving data, apps, accounts, etc. You may need to install a few stubborn apps, and if you use a third-party launcher like Nova you'll have to set up your home screens again (Nova has a backup and restore function, but you will have to redo your widgets). All in all, it's a great time-saver. The only thing you'll probably want to do is then move your critical files from the internal storage to the microSD card. I've already installed Smart Switch and waiting for the phone to get here!

How does everyone plan on transferring their data? Has anyone used smart switch?
being a new note 8, i did with my note 7, setting up as new device at default and only reinstall apps one by one, yes i have 333 apps, and as far as samsung cloud move music and contacts in from back up. smartswitch or any method. therefore less risk of corruption or conflicts as its a new device and dont want to carry over residual issues on the transfer. this is how ive done it on my other recent 33 devices.

Thanks chief for the intel on this app. Never heard of it but that's not too weird signed this will be my first Sammy. I usually dont care about SMS messages and the like being lost in a fresh install but this is cool to know. Maybe ill use it when i trade up from the note 8 to the note 9.. ;-)

Every time I've transferred with VZW Backup Assistant, I've lost the custom phone number type I use on Samsungs. I.e. instead of calling a phone number fax, work, home, mobile, etc., I can give the number a custom type, e.g. Frank, Frederica, etc. I hope SmartSwitch will get this info, as I've never seen the capability on non-Samsung phones.

Chief, It's good to be back. I remember your posts on the Note 7 forum. Sorry, vzw's app is called "Cloud." That's where I back up to regularly. My transfer plan is as follows:
  • Smart Switch for: call logs, contacts, IM's, possibly photos/videos unless my SD card is bad, which it might be
  • vzw Cloud: photos/videos if need be
  • Settings and app's will be freshly installed. I want to go through the trouble since I'll get to know the 8 better that way and I'll be moving from Android 7.0 to 7.1, although I'm not sure that makes any difference; I need to look up the differences.

Samsung included Samsung Cloud, which is 15GB free storage, with the Note 7 (and presumably the Note 8)... but Verizon replaced it with their own lame 5GB storage. I refuse to reward that behavior.

Fortunately, the Note 7 had Samsung Cloud - it just didn't have an icon. There was a way to create one and use it. Whether that little trick will work on the Note 8 remains to be seen.

So did I. It created the shortcut, but it does nothing. But guess what? I found a way to make it work!

(I'm so freaking brilliant)

:D

Instead of using SCoudActivity, use Backup&Sync. That will create a working shortcut!

I have no idea how I ended up with 38.44GB of storage - I'm not going to ask, either!

Uh oh... I may have posted too soon. Samsung Cloud Backup & Restore DOES come up... and I can select what things I want to back up. However, when I press "Sync and Back Up" nothing happens. It just sits there. I tried rebooting, with no change. I'll keep experimenting with this, but feel free to jump in and help.

I couldnt get my LG and Note to play together on SmartSwitch. WiFi kept switching on and off on both phones for some reason, and theyd never connect to eachother. I tried entering the pin then, and still no dice.
I have downloaded another app, but there is no option to transfer apps on it. Only transfers contacts, calendar, pics, and vids.

I was really looking forward to being able to use smart switch after having to use other apps to switch to LG. I am disappointed its not working and I cant figure out why.

Samsung backup and restore worked great for me but I had to bypass my music folder. Good thing it's all on the external card! Love that we get 15GB again.
I set my phones up for smart switch and hedged my bet with Helium for some of the apps whose data never transfers. Worked like a champ. I was amazed at how smoothly everything moved over and I was up and playing.
