Still haven't received 2.1 ota update

So I still haven't received the update. I'm in the greater Los Angeles, CA area. I also bought the phone when it first came out but that shouldn't matter. Anyone else not receive it yet?

One thing I'm speculating is 'Background Data.' Do I need to leave that on to receive the update? I leave it off and only turn it on when I'm browsing the Market. All I need to leave on is '3G Mobile Network' right? I don't leave it on 24/7 so maybe I was supposed to receive it OTA but my 3G was off.

It's really bugging me that all the people I know that own a crappy Eris already received the update and I'm still sitting here with an expired 1.5 cupcake...

Yes, you need either background data or WiFi on. If your phone is ready for the update but you have had data off, it may show up if you open the dialer and type in the following number:

*#*#CHECKIN#*#*

(Note the order of the asterisk and pound.)

After you enter you do not need to hit dial - once you hit the last "*" it will go back to showing your contact list and you can close the dialer. You will eventually get a notification - you may get some market updates, you will get a notifications with an exclamation point within a triangle that says "checkin: success". If you do not get the OTA, leave data on overnight and you may have it tomorrow. You may get the system update notification as well, though.

VZW did say that the update would be staged over two weeks, and we are now in day 8, so it's possible that your phone just isn't one of the ones to get the update yet.

I downgraded from the 2.1 OTA leak to 1.5 and as soon as I did whammo the 2.1 OTA update hit my device. Also for those of you waiting I'd recommend doing a factory reset it clears up a lot of issues you'll have to reinstall your apps and resync your contacts but in the long run you're far better off. Now if I could just get the little HTC droid animation instead of "HTC Quietly Brilliant" that would be nice.

We've been recommending a full factory data reset as the final step in the installation of the OTA. That seems to clear up/avoid some reported shortcomings in the syncing, browser and phone behaviors (see the sticky).

I see you're a "proud" 2.1 user these days eh? And a new avatar ta boot. It was the end of an era....are you at least happy with the update?

...and we are all automatons that cannot decide on our own apparently. ;)

The vast majority here, 99.9% I'd hazard to estimate ;), yes. :D

..clamoring and whining about "no 2.1 OTA yet!" "They don't intend to even send out 2.1 to Eris users, they want us to buy the (fill in the blank)!" .. etc.. "It's allready February and still no OTA promised in December!" .. etc ..

what's the difference between a 'hard reset' & a 'factory reset' ?

and how do you do the two?

also, i thought the new update was supposed to wipe out all downloaded apps and revert settings to default. it didn't do either of those for me. is that normal?

They are the same. Factory Reset=Menu>Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset. Some people reported the OTA not wiping their phones. It seemed very random to me. The factory reset WILL wipe out everything on your phone, not your SD card.

Good post on backing up.

did it wipe out everything for you and other people? i don't mind doing a factory reset if it will benefit me in the future and the smoothness of my phone. i was surprised nothing got wiped including settings.

so to make things clear, factory reset would just erase my apps/contacts & revert settings to default. correct?
