it premiers on Sept 24. I have high hopes for this.

as i understand it.. it is set to 10 yrs before the original series start.
the huge war with the Klingon... the previews look great and exciting.

from the previews... my biggest question...
why do the Klingons look different? why change their appearance??
i sure hope i am wrong about this.. because this will really piss me off.

If it's Star Trek, I'll watch it. As for the Klingons, well didn't they look very different in the original series (TOS), more like humans? The Worf style Klingon was introduced in TNG.

Some possible explanation here though

https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/18/15658904/star-trek-discovery-klingon

But as I say, any Trek is good to me, like Star Wars, I watch it all. Look forward to the new movie.

yeah... from the orginal to .. the next generation...
there was a difference in look.. but they had the same generic makeup... Darker skin.. angry.. dark hair.. big brow.. etc..
the difference that i assumed to be.. pushed by current general tech of the makeup design of the Television era.

the orginal .. they could only do so much in 1970's TV makeup tech and budget.
the NG... I assumed with the greater TV tech and makeup... they expanded the Klingon look.
which i accepted. it was reasonable.. and drove our imagination.

with your new explanation of the virus.. and the total difference in look..
i dont know.. depending on how they develop this storyline.. i might be able to buy into it.

I've just finished the first episode... and I've never enjoyed an episode of Startrek as much as this....

Its on Netflix in the UK... and I'm genuinely disappointed that I have to drag myself away and can't watch the next episode immediately.... (but i did make a promise to go and fix something for my daughter as soon as the first episode was finished... that was made before i realised that A, it was any good, and B they had released the second episode at the same time).

Its great, looks amazing, wasn't played for cliche, and didn't look cheesy at all..... I Loved it.

Can confirm. :(

It's pretty much the serialized embodiment of everything I dislike about the JJ Abrams movies. I guess it makes for good TV, but it's not the Star Trek I want to watch. I'm glad that some people do like it, though, and I hope that the venture is ultimately successful despite CBS's attempt to use Discovery to prop up their exclusive subscription service that no one asked for. If ST:D is able to get new fans interested in the Star Trek universe then I think that's a great thing.

Granted, I may have been slightly less critical if I could have watched it on Netflix or another streaming services I already pay for. CBS just doesn't offer enough content that I want to watch with their $6/mo (with ads) or $10/mo (ad-free) plans, and Discovery isn't worth the $36/$60 it would cost me to watch. I canceled my CBS All Access trial subscription immediately after watching the second episode.

I started watching Orville as a palate-cleanser after feeling so let down by ST:D, and I'm actually really enjoying it. It feels way more like Trek to me, and I guess it's that feeling that I was really after. I didn't have any hesitation to throw down $20 to purchase the season on Google Play after watching the first episode for free.

Hmm... I'm not sure that I would but the streaming service on the basis of just one show... (although Ironically that's exactly what I did with Netflix... we took the trial solely because of the new series of Arrested Development they were showing) unless there was enough additional content their as well.

And i'm really not sure how episode 3 is going to compare... having broken up the relationship between the two 'lead' characters in ep 1 and ep 2.... forming a new team in ep3 is going to be tough.

So far, they have managed to avoid the flaws of TNG/DS9/Voyager... and it has more weight than the flimsy but well meaning Enterprise.

(Mind you... I'm an odd person who wonders what Andromeda would have been like, had they have had the courage to set it at the end of the Star Trek Timeline..... )

just watched the first 2 episodes of Discovery... love it!

the Klingons are still odd to me... but they are somewhat close to the look of Klingons of yesteryear.. so i will see how it goes on this.

the bridge is pretty damn big and dark.. not like other ST shows. but i like it. this is a darker ST. war time.. lots of deaths... tragedies... real-ish.

the alien with the monitor-head... what happened to that species in the future ST series? i guess they will be wiped-out in future episodes?

NO.. i will NOT be paying for this streaming service.
that is a stupid strategy... this might be how this series dies!
they need to rethink this.. and make it available on other platforms.
NOT fair to be available on NETFLIX outside the USA.

I suspect what will happen with this, is that they'll decide they aren't making enough money from this via streaming... and then it will be rolled out where it can be seen by everyone.

Star Trek/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT all went big in syndication.... which is why they're on one channel or another all the time... Discovery will be added into the mix , sooner rather than later.

My fear is that They will conclude "huh, I guess there's no money in Star Trek anymore" and we won't see Star Trek anything.

I'll have to catch it if/when it appears on one of the Freeview channels. Actually we have a bit of a ST void, as I can't see any of the series being aired at the moment.

funny .. entertaining ... with some depth.. and cheesy too
Which is the embodiment of the adventure with a touch of whimsy that Roddenberry brought to ST TOS.

I can't get into Discovery. No sir, that's not Trek ... it's more like Battlestar Galactica, or maybe Hawaii 5.0 in space. ;) It's what killed Enterprise, they take it too damn seriously and just repeat the same old storyline of humans pissing off every alien species they meet.

Don't turn the Klingons into warmongering Jihadists just for the pseudo-social commentary. TOS did that well ... this is not well.

I won't be ponying up the $6 to keep up. Sad really as I am as trekkie as they come. I even saw Star Trek IV in the theatre ... all the way to the end.

What about The Orville?
I surprised myself by how much I'm enjoying The Orville.

Like @dan330 mentioned, I didn't expect much going into it, but it quickly grabbed me with *gasp* characters that I actually cared about doing things that would make me proud to call them allies while wrestling with some surprisingly-deep moral questions that force the viewer to look inward and consider their own preconceived notions.

just watched the 3rd episode...

it was a good one... very very different from other series.
the characters are growing on me... i like Michael.

Spoiler Alert:

But when Michael walked into her cabin as a convict...
it reminded me of 7-of-9.. when she walked into her hanger.
both were outsiders that were seen as the dangerous crew.

spoiler alert:

4th episode...
the creature was able to kill 12 well armored Klingons, and heavy weapons ...
and the security officer.. no armor with one rifle and a knife.. tried to kill it?
what do you think the outcome would be??

how did she survive to be a security officer? and why was she not wearing a "red" shirt.
stupid move.

Well... the good news that everyone here was hoping for ;)

We're getting a second season

https://www.space.com/38537-star-trek-discovery-renewed-season-2.html

(and the more episodes there are, the higher the chance it will get broadcast/syndicated in a more conventional manner)

I'm loving the fact that they don't wrap up the things neatly at the end of each episode, TNG I'm talking to you.

hmm this is nearly Babylon Trek!

(speaking of which, The TV channel Pick in the UK is about to start showing Babylon 5 again..... )
