A thought I had about the OTA for Leakers...

Facts:
- It seems only those on 1.5 have been getting the OTA so far.
- The downloadable OTA file does not install to leaked versions of 2.1. It plain fails via SD card.
- According to Verizon, the whole process will take up to 14 days. (14 days for all eris' to be updated that is)
- Also, verizon reps on twitter (VZW Support (VZWSupport) on Twitter) continually claim that EVERY Eris owner will receive an OTA update. Even specifically stating that "Leakers will still get updated"

Now this got me thinking, especially with the whole HBOOT thing that was found recently.

Is it possible that Verizon's first wave of OTA updates will only be going to those running 1.5, then once they are dont updating 1.5 users they will push a DIFFERENT OTA to leakers? Perhaps an update that will overcome the HBOOT problem? Hence why Verizon keeps insisting that leakers will be updated?

Oh and as far as the Reps on twitter being wrong about the leakers being updated, I would think by now that someone internally would have updated them on the correct answer by now if they were giving out wrong information. Perhaps there is nothing to correct? Maybe they are giving out the right info and leakers just have to wait a few more days until the OTA's come down? A different OTA of course, but would still essentially be the official 2.1 that the people that went 1.5 -> 2.1 now have.

And yes I know that OTA 2.1 is the same as Leak 3, but perhaps whatever "hypothetical" OTA Verizon would send leakers would put us all on the same HBOOT once again.

Thoughts?

Feel free to correct me on any facts I posted by the way.

From kkpsichologist @ Twitter
@vzwsupport will the Eris' with leaked 2.1 receive the OTA since the HBOOT is higher which doesn't allow flashing of the lower OTA version?

From VZWsupport @ Twitter
@kkpsichologist If you have the leaked version you should receive the OTA update to your phone. *AN

I Still think there is something that we shouldn't ignore about VZW constantly telling twitter users that Leaked Versions will get the OTA.

I do believe that they will put out a version...that is compatible with our current bootloader version. If you have 1.5, you don't need anything other than OTA. If they are to put out a manual download or an expanded OTA, then it will only be needed by those who installed leaked versions.

In the twitter sent to you, the wording included, "should". By the way, have you seen a statement by anyone that says, "Whoops, we didn't send all of the features that we promised. That would be another case of support not getting corrected by higher ups.

Just being devils advocate. I hope that you are right! :)

Not to try to stir the point on these Twitter things, but I noticed earlier today on almost all of these posts on Twitters official site, they show "invalid account" if you put your cursor above their names. Not all of them, but most. Maybe someone is not telling the Twitter world the truth??? These tweets may be BS from someone... Just saying.

these support guys on Twitter probably aren't in communications with the development team and have no idea what an HBOOT even is... They're just saying the same thing over and over again so as not to give out too much info at this point... it's a PR ploy that they'll deal with later.

Anyway, VZW probably doesn't mind a handful of users having the leak... as we see on this forum, the majority of users stayed with 1.5 and received the OTA - Android Forums - View Poll Results

The first part of your message may be correct. The 2nd part though. The poll that you referenced doesn't fit your point. The poll asks which version users who GOT the OTA were on. Nobody on v2 or v3 (for sure) has gotten the OTA. Therefore, the ones who did post did not read the poll correctly or flat out lied.

There are other polls that do point to there being a higher number of users who were on 1.5, but again, that depended on who cared to vote. IF you want to look at this from a global perspective, the forum is but a very small part of the entire Eris population, a large majority of which probably did not run the leak. So....your point is likely correct but just have to get your ducks in a row.

Yea, that's what I mean... this forum is just a small sample, and it's obvious that only 1.5 users are getting the OTA... so the larger picture should be the same. Say leakers are <1% of the total user population, then VZW won't do anything to """""officially""""" update our phones. In any case, it doesn't matter at this point. We all have the same software, minus the HBOOT... and that's another story not worth getting into.

I think you just need to be patient. One of the Twitter reps said he knows of exactly one person who has received the OTA who was on a leak. Pretty sure he's talking about himself, and he's one of their beta testers who was using the leak. He also reads these forums, and he's clearly more knowledgeable about the Eris and 2.1 than the others.

I've read that too thenestor, and if my memory serves me correctly, this member made the statement, a long time ago, that those with leaked versions would get the updated 2.1.
