Too bright display

Is it possible to get pixel 2 to turn brightness to minimum when it is completely dark? I can still turn it darker from using the slider, but I prefer that the display just turns to min brightness automatically when there is no ambient light.

Do you have it set to automatic? (Settings/display brightness/automatic)
On my s5 i have it set to automatic. So naturally it turns dark when in a dark room. When i turn off auto option I'm able to make it even darker but the difference is too small anyway.

In case the darkest display is not good enough i use an app called darker, it allows me to make it even darker.

Does this work automatically or do you have to turn it on every time?

How dim the automatic brightness take it when in a dark room still depends on where the slider is set. If you have it set to ~26% or less then in a completely dark room it dims all the way. If you have it set higher it doesn't dim quite as much (i.e. if you can still make it dimmer by sliding the slider down further).

I tested this empirically by covering the sensor (which is just above the earpiece) and then adjusting the slider. Starting from the bottom there's a point where it brightens slightly, and setting just below that seems to be 26%.

168 views and Noone has any ideas? Seems like a common issue
Or, more likely, people view the post to see what the question is, and having seen that decide they don't have an answer and hence don't post a reply. Doesn't tell you whether it's a "common issue" because not all will even have a Pixel 2 and so won't have anything to say when they realise it really is a device-specific question. And for others (such as myself) it's not really an issue that worries us: for me it dims enough in any environment I actually use it in (might not if I set it to high brightness, but I find that too bright even in daylight so never do so).

Right now with the slider set in the middle it lights up perfectly in daylight... If I turn it down for night then I have to turn it up again for day otherwise it's too dim. I have blue filter on fire nighttime, but it's still brighter than I prefer for night, so if I could just get another level of low ambient light to get below the current state then things would work for me. I see that the screen goes to lowest possible light setting when it's not completely dark... So I'm guessing it should be possible. If the camera just can't distinguish low and very low ambient light, then I'm fine with just very low screen light for low ambient light
