Sounds to me like the leak is better then OTA

From what I am hearing on here from those with the OTA, I am glad I have the leak v3. I have not had any problems at all with it.

The only difference in v3 leak and the OTA update is the HBOOT version, which is only responsible for the actual process of loading the firmware onto your phone.

They are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing. Some people have had the new software activate issues with their phone's hardware that were already there but not apparent prior to the update. These people should return their phone to Verizon as defective and get a replacement.

I too, have had no issues. No silent call or lag at all. Great update and a great phone.

No, he posted that so I could ask this question without starting another thread. If you have the OTA can you install the leak V.3? Not sure why anyone would want to, but you never know.

2.1v3 IS superior to the official OTA veriosn. Did I mention that I'm running 2.1v3 leak with no option (yet?) for the "official" release?

Doesn't the "leak" force you to wipe the phone? The OTA did not wipe anything but contacts and worked like crap. After people wiping their phones the OTA works well. Seems like the only thing worse about the OTA was verizon trying to be nice and not wiping the phone like they should have.

Example: I just upgraded from windows XP to windows 7. I needed to do a CLEAN full install and some of my windows XP programs didn't work right yet. Not going to blame Microsoft for a 3rd party "app" not working right when it was designed for XP.

You know what's funny? Back on february 17, verizon sent an ota of 2.1 (equivalent to leak v1 but as an update instead of a wipe) to a bunch of its beta testers, and they got a bunch of complaints about htc widgets not working, contacts being erased, and various other problems. I always thought that the reason they fell behind schedule (besides the bug fixes in the os itself) was that they were trying to fix the ota update script to avoid those problems. Clearly not!

I do agree that the leak may be better than the OTA. Well, at least there were less risks when installing it. Maybe "better" isn't the best word, because they are essentially the same. It just seems that more bugs popped up from the OTA than with the leak.

A lady I work with received the OTA and immediately started getting the silent call problem. She never had it on 1.5. I advised her to take the phone into Verizon if it happens again. She did a factory reset with no success.

Anyway, downey, if you're still around, I'd like to know why you think the leak is somehow less buggy than the OTA. I've considered the idea that I may never get the OTA and was wondering whther or not to try the v3 leak since I'm on v1 now. Why do you think its any better than the OTA?

Two things, it is not "unbelievable" that a posting can be worded wrong for the idea meant. My, "you joined to say that" was not meant in a horrid negative light, but a real question. I do agree that a nice welcome should have been the beginning of the post, and a query as to my reaction to the thread title.

If I can avoid the OTA, I will. I'm happy with my Eris on v3.

Well, I know two people, one I work with, who are less satisfied after the update. The one person's phone is almost unusable because of the silent call issue.

I don't buy the good 1.5 equals a good 2.1 anymore. While it's a good theory, I've seen the contrary first hand.

you know I was thinking, alot of the problems might be stemming from the fact that it didn't wipe the phone. Have you ever upgraded say Windows on your computer without doing a format? Talk about a mess. I did it once. Never again. It might just be that it carries over and possibly amplifies existing problems.

Chances are, those of us that had installed the leak probably read the sticky post prior to. One of the steps in that post was a factory reset before the install. Pretty good idea evidently.

The only issues Ive had with leak v1:

• Google sign-on problem after a reboot.
• Callers sometimes hear a massive echo of their voice back to them

So I might consider the v3 leak. I was just wondering why downey originally posted that some think the v3 leak is better or less buggy than the OTA possibly. Sounds like its really more of a crapshoot as you said.

If you have the OTA can you install the leak V.3?

It's been pointed out that the v3 leak and the OTA have everything in common except for the presence of a boot loader in the v3 which is not in the OTA.

I am not certain yet if I agree with that; the v3 leak has been in the hands of Eris users quite a bit longer than the OTA, so when that evens out a bit I believe we'll see more differences.

I have to say that after coming from leak v1 to leak v3, I've only had the speaker issue once, I don't have to sign in to my Google account everytime I boot up the phone, and the 50% bug was able to be killed with the "airplane mode" trick, something I couldn't do in v1. I agree with bswartz, I'm happy with the v3 leak, and just aren't interested in the OTA anymore.

I have had essentially zero problems with the OTA 2.1. Though I did do a factory reset after the install as I think everyone should do.
