My note 8 has been freezing pretty often. not when im on a call just out of the blue Boom its froze. Im using it one min, next min i go to look at it, and its froze. won't turn off NOTHING. I have to do a power volume down reboot. also happens in the middle of the night when it's not being used at all. anyone else having this issue? and what can I do to fix it!!

TIA!!

Your issues are most likely local to your phone.

Things it could be?

-roge app
-limited memory
-too many background processes
-aggressive battery saver program
-if you installed a backup from an older device to your note 8, you could have installed something faulty in the backup.

What carrier are you on?
Are you rooted?

Clearly when you first got the phone it was working properly, so did you recently install or uninstall something?

Did you remove some factory installed processes in an attempt to “remove bloatware” ?

I have Verizon not rooted and I pretty much have the same exact apps as I did on my last phone the Galaxy S7 so I really made no changes except for really getting the new phone. Yes when I first got it it took a few weeks maybe a month and then it froze but now it keeps happening. Sometimes once a day sometimes a couple times a day. Maybe I should reset the whole phone and start over and see what happens. But that is such a pain in the ass

It could still be a "rogue app" as previously mentioned by the Moderator. Sometimes apps are updated to a less than stable update. Take a look at your recent updates and if possible, restore them one by one to a previous version and see if that helps. Alternatively, try to update to see if there may have been a "fix" release.

with no disrespect intended to anyone, i highly doubt what the OP is experiencing is a "known issue". these phones don't randomly freeze or lock up out of the box or in a factory refreshed condition. Since the OP stated the device got worse over the weeks, alerts to me that its most likely something rogue on the phone (app, tangled database, etc.).

clearing the phone's cache (not the app cache (although is worth a shot but could be impractical if you have many many apps), but the phones cache using the power=bixby+volume key) is also a good way to clean things up. google services can also cause some freezes as well.

With all respect to my colleague @marctronixx - there is a rapidly-growing thread on this very issue in the Samsung Community Forums:

https://us.community.samsung.com/t5...icpage/board-id/Note8QA/thread-id/3041/page/1

It is VERY widespread and has been reported for months. No one is really sure of the cause, because users are reporting these "freezes" with no common app or configuration.

I was able to find that clearing the cache in the Dialer and Google Play Services has greatly reduced the number of "freezes" I experience: but no one has yet to determine the root cause of it and actually fix it. I'm hopeful that the imminent Oreo update with Samsung Experience 9 will resolve it. We'll see!

This only happens when I'm doing something I shouldn't. If I'm on any of my apk apps longer that 2 hours. Pandora one, showbox, uluh (Hulu backwards), og YouTube (which is free YouTube red). If I run those apps long my phone freezes. I can wait 5 mins or I can waste battery and restart.

no disrespect intended @The_Chief , and I am well aware of other people having issues with this device.

im from the school of thought in that lets first try to see if the phone can be troubleshot before assuming its the fault of the device.

there are thousands upon thousands of these devices out in the world and there will be some faulty devices off the assembly line just by the nature of the mass assembly process, so just because its a "growing" thread/concern with 100 or so people in it (out of literally hundreds of thousands of note 8 users) does not mean the end of the world.

ive had this note8 since the first production run last year. i use it hard and put it away wet every day. I have everything set to max performance and am always downloading large amounts of data and I have not ever had this device freeze, lock up, or slow down to date, so if i can achieve that kind of success, id rather help someone else out first before lumping them into a "its a well known problem" stance and wipe my hands of them...

'I use it hard and put it away wet every day' That just went into my top phrases to say.

I use it hard and put it away wet every day.

That's what HE said!
:D:D:D

Good thing it's waterproof, huh?

We can mince words with this all day... you can say that because more people haven't reported the issue, it really isn't a big deal. I could counter with the probability of a large number of users who are experiencing it, but haven't reported it. But I think we find common ground in trying to solve any problem at the lowest level possible. Sure, we can assume that it's DJ Koh's fault... that he just wanted to give us freezing Note 8s to make us salivate over the coming Note 9. Or we can say that there are nano-variations in the circuitry that may or may not play well with certain apps, certain combinations of apps running at the same time, or certain functions. I'm willing to accept that.

It's Koh's fault LOL

I have a scenario that happens frequently in this type of industry that is very viable and could help explain the "not so wide spread" issue. Samsung sources out parts from varying vendors. Sometimes in sourcing pieces/parts they will award a different vendor a part that another vendor has been providing that will be less expensive from the new vendor. In some instances, they only purchase a limited number of these parts and so you get a production run of say 100 units as an example that are fitted with the new vendor's part. In the overall specification, the parts seem to be 100% compatible, but in actuality are not. This can cause a limited number of units to act slightly differently than the others. I owned an HP desktop years ago that had an off brand hard drive. Although I never had any issues with the unit, there was a repair recall on the desktop to replace the hard drive and when you contacted HP, they would send a new hard drive and instructions to replace or certain repair facilities in the area that would effect the repair. It turns out that they had purchased a limited number of these hard drives, which for the most part were faulty. It only affected a group of desktops with a certain range of SN's.

All that being said, you can have a physical issue with a unit that is a design flaw that doesn't affect the entire "in the wild" supply of units, but none the less is a fault of the physical unit and not the user.

BigRedGonzo

P.S., This adds absolutely no value to this discussion what so ever.

Just so this thread doesn’t get lost in off topic banter,

OP, if you feel your device is suffering an issue, you are encouraged to reach out to samsung support right away. Log a ticket and if needed, inquire about a replacement device.

If this is indeed a widespread issue as some are saying, the more people to submit tickets the more Samsung will look deeper into it.
