School shootings

Woke up this morning to continuous coverage of a school shooting here in the LA area. Why do these keep happening?! What has happened to kids these days that makes them want to attack others in such a devastating way? And how is it that they can so easily get guns--don't their parents keep them locked away like they're supposed to? Oh, this time the shooter is female.

Yeah I have actually witnessed one before :(

It was a young black man with a panga chopping up people around the school out side attacking parents I was screaming through the window at him to get away from the parent outside and a couple of my friends it was scary as ****

A panga is the African word for machete.

He was on drugs and that's why he was doing what he was doing :(

I believe I remember you mentioning that incident a while ago, when you were working with kids. It must have been terrifying.

Yes I used to work with kids hehe I remember those days that was about 7 years ago I think lol :D

But this happened while I was still in school it was about 14 years ago I think if I recall correctly now... it was freaking sick and sent shivers right up my spine I wish had been dreaming, later in life I asked my friends if it was hopefully a nightmare but it sadly wasn't and I was real :(

I was going suicidal and all sorts back then and losing my mind so I was hoping I had been hallucinating but no I wasn't :(

Sheesh that job with kids was very very hard looking after kids hey phew very stressful!

Even looking after a refinery is a walk in the park compared to looking after children!

I feel very sorry for all those involved in the shoot I have no idea what I feel so much for you :(

God bless all those involved may God guide you through such horrifying times :(

Sadly I think this world has gone mad :(

So it turns out this was an accident--the backpack the gun was in fell, and the gun went off.

Would someone who knows about guns explain the plausibility of this, please? To me, with my very limited knowledge of guns, it seems unlikely.

At any rate, I'm finding comfort in the fact it was unintentional, but of course I have to wonder why she brought the gun to school in the first place...

A child should not have a gun in their possession unless under adult supervision and only after extensive training. To have a loaded gun in a backpack is a bad idea at best. To have it at school is a worse idea. In the care of a child.. crazy.

I was trained to handle a gun in my youth. I was hunting alone by the time I was 12. Being in charge of a loaded weapon is a great responsibility. Tossing it in a backpack and taking it to school is far from responsible. I can't imagine how anyone except an uneducated child would consider this a good idea. The blame is on the parent/guardian. If a gun is going to be accessible to anyone... they should be trained to handle it safely... in a safe place... in a safe
manner.

So it was a loaded pistol, in a backpack, and apparently with the safety lock off as well. I don't know what to say about that.

That's what gets me about it. If the girl knew enough about her parents' gun(s) to know where to find it/them, didn't she know enough about guns to know about the safety lock? I don't use guns (nothing against them for protection or entertainment) but even I know there's a locking mechanism on them. I'm just puzzled by the whole thing.

No she didn't. I found one under my grandma's piano when I was a kid. Turned out it was my race track tout uncle's gun. My Fathers brother. "Charlie Fox" RIP

He did have it on safe though so that's why I'm still alive. IIRC it was a .32 Straight Gangster.

I'm very glad you're around to tell us about it! :)

My parents divorced when I was 5 and I don't have a lot of memories of my father (ugly divorce, visits stopped after a short while and I lost contact with him). One thing I'll never forget is finding his gun, a revolver I THINK, tucked away under the bed on a yellow washcloth. I have no idea if its safety lock was on because I didn't dare touch it. Somehow I knew that I wasn't supposed to, but I don't know how I knew that. STUPID place for a gun, locked or not, with three kids under 7 in the house!

If it was a revolver it probably didn't have a safety.

Thanks for that info. As I've said, my knowledge of firearms is very limited, plus I was 3 or 4 when I found that gun under my parents' bed.

I think we are close age mates. I'll update my profile to show I'm 60.

Did I turn off birthday?

We're definitely in the same neighborhood! :D I like to say I'm 50+.

I don't know enough about firearms to know which have locks and which don't, but it seems like common sense, to me, that they ALL should!

They should all be secured if they are easily accessed by a child or someone with little working knowledge of a hand gun. It is safe to assume that all guns are loaded and ready to fire until you personally unload the weapon or inspect it to prove it is not loaded. To assume it is safe to handle without following that protocol is NOT SAFE under any circumstance.

As I said before, for a child to have a loaded and ready gun loose in a backpack at school is wrong on so many levels that it makes my eyes sweat.
