Android to iPad texting app

I need a texting app that will work with the galaxy and an iPad. I’m the only one in the family that will use android so I want to be able to text my kids. I guess WhatsApp doesn’t work on the iPad. Kind of sucks. Any ideas?

WhatsApp will work fine on an iPad, they just need to install the WhatsApp app for iOS. Actually it's Apple's iMessage that's the problem as Apple refuses to allow their iMessage protocol to be used on other platforms.
But just leaving proprietary protocols aside, the lingua franca of texting is still SMS and MMS. WhatsApp and iMessage work best when interacting with their own respective apps but both also support SMS/MMS so no matter what texting app you use there's always that.

I tried to install the WhatsApp but it gave me a code to scan with my phone. Can I do that then change the number from mine? It won’t download directly

As said above, if the rest of your family are using iMessage then you are out of luck, because Apple keep that exclusive to Apple devices (to lock people into buying Apple - not that that is unique behaviour in the personal tech business). And SMS require a phone connection. So it sounds like you need a cross-platform internet-based messaging app.

WhatsApp is phone-only, as you've discovered. There are "companion" apps for WhatsApp - I have one on my laptop - but it only works when the phone associated to my WhatsApp account is online. Something like Facebook Messenger or Telegram would work though, and there are many others. However, all of them will require everybody to have the same app installed (which is also true of iMessage when being used as an internet message app rather than SMS).

I have a suggestion for you..why don't you all members of your family that you want to be in constant contact with use ZELLO..it's a two way radio, doesn't discriminate if is Samsung, iwhatever and so on..with a touch of your finger tips you can talk and be heard and hear across the universe(i bet even the aliens can hear us through that too)..it's a wonderful option..many people use this particular app when distance is an issue on and off throughout the dayh not phone calls none like that)..you should look into it and try it out before dishing the option..though it's a little tricky to set it up..
First you create a contact for each individual, including yours too..then you can create a family group, if you want to..then you will add one by one each of the members you want to be ascribe into it..

Let me know.
