What apps work at 'no charge' if I take my Hero overseas?

I read some things in a search about GPS working overseas, but my question is more on the lines of other apps. Such as translator, Where, text to speak, weather. Basically Im going to Italy soon and want to know if any of these things will work while Im over there to help me along and not be charge some extra fee. I dont plan to make any calls with it.

Any help is much appreciated.

Anything you are using over wi-fi and not the mobile network will be fine.

Let me elaborate on Nicki's response...

Any app's that use DATA may cost you as the DATA access would then be charged on International Roaming Rates which could be quite hefty indeed, if you can get service at all.

There was a thread a few months ago discussing the issue of using WiFi and turning off all other radios on the Hero, you might want to search for it.

Also, there are Stand Alone GPS apps that would not require data access as Google & Sprint does for updating it's map as you move around. This would work to provide you GPS function without the need to access data and incur charges.

Lastly, I would make a determination of exactly what you will need or want to use while abroad from the phone. Some app's access the data network and you will need to identify them and if you will need to use them. Determine then also if Sprint has Foreign Service /Roaming Agreements where you will travel and what the cost might be. Will you NEED mobile phone service where you are going? It might be cheaper to RENT a phone where you will go, it's worth checking out. At least then you could decide if shutting down the functions of the phone are worth it or it might actually be better to leave them on? It all depends.

Anyway... hope that helps.

Happy Trails!
