Multitouch??????

Just listened to the Engadget podcast and they said that this device has no multi touch functionality period out of the box. Even the software keyboard does not have it according to them. I need to know if this is real or not it is really bothering me right now. The main reason it is bothering me is because if you go on the VZW Droid Does website in all the features right between turn by turn nav and GTAlk you will see that multitouch is advertised right there. Why would they advertise it if the device does not support it?

In the cNet review (which I trust more), MT is supported except there is no "pinch" in the browser.

The DroidDoes twitter account posted a short while ago that multi touch is supported. I think Engadget just had an early unit without final software, as mkibrick suggested.

I don't see anything in that video that confirms multi touch.

i didnt see anything saying it can do pinch to zoom but it can zoom in and out by doing double taps on the screen.

Droid does support multi-touch. That's because it's running Android 2.0.

The other devices out - Magic, G1, i7500 etc, are running Android 1.6, which does not support multi-touch. When 2.0 is released publically, then they, too, will support multi-touch. All the hardware to date supports multi-touch, it's purely a software thing.

If you have a device with 2.0 (be it a Droid now, or another handset in the future), it's then up to what apps you have to define exactly how that multi-touch is used.

The multitouch for the droid now is really now applicable to the keyboard. There is no pinching.

All I care is that it is available. So that it can be utilized in some form or fashion i the future and if you guys are telling me that it is available from actual hands on experience then I am ok.

Hate to bring this back into existence, but I keep reading conflicting stuff and I want to clarify that indeed multitouch is in the droid and that is not a hardware limitation. My problem is what does this even mean...

Does this mean... that android 2.0 (software) supports it, but the droid (hardware) doesn't? Or does it simply mean it just hasn't been put into the software for the browser, maps, etc on the droid? Just a little confused that's all.

Im confused also.. but from what i read the Droid Eris has MT/pinching and runs Android 1.5, which is what im leaning toward right now...

That is because it has HTC sense which implemented this capability.

I would love to have MT and pinching, but I want to buy a phone that is going to last a couple years. The Moto Droid has much better specs than the Eris which makes it a little more future proof.

I'll try to help clarify. The Droid DOES have the hardware for multitouch. The GSM version of the droid (it has silver accents) DOES have a "pinch" feature already implemented into the web browser, while the non GSM version (gold accents) does not. If your doubtful of this, you can even find a video on youtube of the GSM version and its somewhere around 2:45 or so, if I remember correctly, where the "pinch" feature is used. In summary, the gold accented model (non GSM) does not have "pinching" initially, but that is only on the software side of things, and it WILL be implemented eventually, either by some third party designing an app or a firmware update by moto/verizon, the hardware between the two phones is identical save a few changes to enable GSM.

GSM Droid has pinch, US Droid does not. Speculation is that pinch to zoom was not implemented to respect Apple's US gesture patents. HTC however is perhaps rolling the legal die with its inclusion.

I don't think the stock browser will have it, but hopefully opera or steel will incorporate it.

yea that was the point of the video...that it's available to the developers...im thinkin the whole apple-pressure rumor is true and google couldnt officially put pinch-zoom in any stock apps. i've never used pinch-zoom coming from wm6.5 but i think it's too bad people arent gonna get the droid because of this apple-popularized feature.

it's there and im sure some genius hacker dude will make a plugin to enable it even for the stock browser.
