Help Note 8 - Random Notification Sound

My phone creates a random notification beep sound throughout the day when the Volume is turned ALL the way up. I like the volume turned up to prevent missing calls.

Here is what I have tried unsuccessfully:
1. Turned ALL notification OFF.
2. Tried Unsuccessfully to Find that Specific Sound on the Phone
3. Checked Google Account and Facebook account for notifications.
4. Started Uninstalling apps one at a time throughout a day trying to find that specific app.
5. Completely Reset the Phone and turned all notifications off.
6. Tried working in the developer options (in the settings) of the phone.

My GUESS for this quick random descending beeping notification is it has something to do with the GPS because it does it usually when I am walking around. If I walk out of my house and into the yard it might do it. If I walk from my office into another part of my work it will do it. If I walk around the neighborhood, it might do it.

I have tried to find this sound on the internet and could not. I cannot record the sound because it is too random and has a short duration. I am now into a bad habit of saying, “D*mn Phone” every time it happens.

Any help tracking this would be GREATLY Appreciated.

if you have factory reset your phone and it still occurs, you may have a faulty device.

lets get some background info so we are not all chasing our tails over the internet...

is your phone rooted?
what carrier?
do you have oreo installed?
any 3rd party launcher?

how long have you had the phone?
was it purchased new or used?
is it a refurb?

has this "sound" been happening since day one of you having the device?

if not, do you recall deleting or installing anything?

when you have the phone muted does it still make the sound? what about when you are in a call?

put the phone in airplane mode and walk around in those areas you have seen this "sound" occur.

do you see a screen popup with anything (image, etc) when this occurs?

do you have oreo installed? - Android 7.1.1 (I believe the name is "Nougat")

any 3rd party launcher? - No.

how long have you had the phone? - About 1 Month.
was it purchased new or used? - New from Verizon Sealed in the box.
is it a refurb? - No.

has this "sound" been happening since day one of you having the device? - Yes.

if not, do you recall deleting or installing anything? - No.

when you have the phone muted does it still make the sound? - No. what about when you are in a call? - No Sound.

put the phone in airplane mode and walk around in those areas you have seen this "sound" occur. - I can not get it to make the sound in airplane mode

do you see a screen popup with anything (image, etc) when this occurs? No popups and no notifications on any programs (ie badges).

***You bring up a good point. If it is not the GPS it is possible it could be associated with the wifi or network hand off.

Here is some more back ground information. I have always been a Motorola user until they came out with there current phone selection. I took my SIM card out of my Motorola phone and installed everything on my Note 8 thru my Google Account and Play Store Account. I had the thought that something used in the Motorola Phone was making the sound. This lead to the complete factory reset.

Verizon Technicians (both in store and telephone support) does not know what the problem is. They both just Googled it and sent me YouTube videos that was not my problem. They told me to post on the Android Forum.

Phone Information:
1-Month Old, Purchased New
Not Rooted
Android Version 7.1.7
Samsung Experience Version 8.5
Security Patch February 1, 2018
Hardware Version Rev1.0

Kindest Regards.

Thank you Ron,

I do not have, "Notification Reminder" in that part of my settings. I have tried turning ALL apps off. Also, I went into the "Advanced" Notifications settings and found "Reminder" it is currently ON. The only settings for it here is a switch to, "Set as Priority". It is currently set off.

Settings > Notifications (Lists All the Apps)
Settings > Notifications > Advanced (Lists Additional OS Apps with some able to be turned off)

My phone just made that random sound again while I was driving down the road. Nothing was on, no indication of why. I am so suspect to the phone making the beep, beep sound when it hands off the signal or the something in the GPS.

Once the sound is made, I cannot get it to do it again. Even if I go around the block and try to pass over that spot again or do exactly what I was doing when it sounded off in the first place.

Appreciate your responses OP. Sad to see you arfe still having issues.

The only other realistic advice to give over the internet is to factory reset the phone and DO NOT INSTALL anything for a day and see if it happens.

This is the only way to verify if your phone has an inherent issue or if its some rogue app installed you dont know about.

If the phone is barely over 30 days old, you can send it back to Samsung for replacement.

It's there. Go to Settings>Notifications. Now scroll all way down to the bottom of the list. There you'll "Looking for Something else?" and see 3 options, one of which should be Notification Reminder. See if that is on. If so, turn it off.

Checking to see if the problem is resolved.

There are many solutions on the internet about a weird spontaneous notification sound with the Samsung Note 8. After turning all notifications off and uninstalling all apps one at a time, I could not find the reason for the random sound. I tried factory resetting the phone to no avail. My final attempt was to get a new phone from Verizon with a new SIM card. I did not update or reinstall any apps from my previous phone. When I used the phone after a while, it made the same sound.

Here is the solution and what I have found was the culprit. It was my holster on my belt which contains magnets to hold the flap closed. These magnets were interfering with an internal sensor on the phone which would make a random noise whenever I walked around. I still cannot reproduce the sound or event. I can only tell you that it has not made the sound when I don’t use the holster. The obvious solution is to get a holster that does not contain magnets and/or metal.

I would love to open the phone and find the exact reason/sensor responsible for this. I would also love to find that exact sound that has drove me and my engineering department completely nuts since the purchase of my new phone. However, these phones are not cheap and I will just have to document my findings for others to benefit from until I get my hands on a sacrificial phone.

Thank you all for reading my post and contacting me with possible solutions.

Kindest Regards,

PS. Yes, NFC is ALWAYS off on my phone.

The Holster is a leather type case with the flap held closed with two internal magnets. The brand name is Turtleback, Made in the USA. I would place my phone in the case with the screen toward my body and the backside of the phone toward the magnets.

Here is the case in question.

Again a description of te sound might help. Is it a ping pr a bell? Is it a single tone or a series Is it a blup or a blip sounding tone?

It is hard to describe in words. I will give it my best shot.

The sound is several descending beeps (3 or 4), a short pause, and then several ascending beeps (3 or 4).
It sounds like a connection type notification. A noise I would choose to use if I were connecting to something.

I have spent several hours searching for that specific sound on the internet. Reviewing Samsung sounds, Android sounds, and general Smart phone sounds. I could not find it.

Hmm. I've also just run through built in notifications, alarms and ringtones using a test Tasker action. It seemed familliar from a previous Note.
No joy on my search but given the decending and then accending pitch it does sound like a disconnect/reconnect tone.

If you use the notification panel to put the phone on silent and back, is that the same style of beep or is it more like a bubble popping?

I have this exact issue.. I will see if I can record it and post here.. So frustrating. Happens when phone on silent too. Can be when I am actively using the phone too. Nothing in notification bar..

My unidentifiable notification sound was definitely created by the magnets in the phone holster that I had. After a ridiculous amount of time fiddling with the phone, apps, and even returning the phone for a new one, the exact problem was that the magnets would interfere with an internal sensor as I would walk around at random times.

I have since found a really nice tactic holster (on Amazon) that has a clip closing the flap instead of velcro. It has never made that sound since.

Good Luck!

I had the same problem and did everything noted on this thread. The only thing I did different between the time I didn't receive these random notifications and I did was sync Chrome between the my computer and my phone when I opened up Chrome browser on my computer. I went back and unsynced it and the random beeps stopped.

I found another unidentified notification sound without an icon appearing on the notification bar. On my weather widget there was an option for a sound to be played when the weather updated ,I don't know how that got turned on, because I went through and turned off all my notifications, but it's turned off now and there are no more unidentified notifications.
