This is a HUGE update. This is similar to XP -> win7 as opposed to a service pack.

Not quite right, have you ever actually done this on a computer?
When you change the OS on your PC you DO NOT actually lose all your data. This is wiping the phone out completely like you are just getting it from the factory. Any ****** could update an OS on a computer, just insert the disk and go. This entire process is much more complicated and will take much more time (it's not just getting the link on your phone & saying 'yes, update now'). We've had this phone since Oct, and a lot of files/apps/data have been personalized and customized to our phones. None of this can "easily be backed up". I have almost 70 apps on my phone...that's quite a bit to re-download. I use my calendar everyday but that cannot be backed up or synced. Yes, my gmail account will back up/sync my contacts-but big deal, this is a no-brainer. I have no concerns about that.
And no, it hasn't been "known for MONTHS", at least not to those of us who don't live on the forums. I spoke to Sprint just a couple weeks ago about when this update was coming. THEY didn't even know about this. I was told that the update would come through under update firmware on the phone and would easily go through and I "wouldn't lose any data".
