I can hardly hear the volume on the HTC desire - whether it be the alarm or the ringer or using the radio through the speaker or call volume

Does anybody else find it so low?

previously I had an HTC Touch HD, the sound on this was also very low but I downloaded some programme to make it far more acceptable.

Does anybody have a solution to this?

Thanks

yes, of course im understanding the volume control function. In quiet areas Im not having a problem to hear the phone ring, but when im in the middle of an urban environment, it becomes very difficult. So this is why I was wondering if there was some kind of application to increase the volume (as there was for the HTC HD touch).
I havnt tried music on the phone, but the radio speaker volume is definetly low

Must admit volume is fine for me also, wonder if it's a batch of phones with this problem? alarm is plenty loud enough, playing .mp4's is fine (at almost full volume) etc etc. Is it the same with all ringtones?

I thought you could only get the radio to work by plugging in headphones? if so how do you get the sound out of the phone's speaker?

You're right you do need the headphone jack in to listen to the radio. However, there is an option to listen to the loudspeaker but you still need the headphones in.

Re. Ring, msg and alert tones. I've found that if I use the pre-installed ones I'm fine and they are more than loud enough. However if I try to use ones that I've put on the phone myself, unfortunately they are not worth bothering with.

I have a Galaxian (old arcade game) tone which I wanted to use as my msg alert, but when I tried it was way to quiet.
I know for a fact it's not the tone because I've used it on my last 3 phones.
In fact I have a SE W995 that has a speaker at the top and the bottom of the handset. It slipped off the couch and the bottom inch of the phone ended up in my cup of tea. Within 24 hours the bottom speaker died which resulted in the ringer/alert volume being cut in half. And even on half volume it's still louder than it is on full volume on the Desire :(

This forum is cluttered with this same issue.MANY IT US NEED A FIX! Please please do as many of us have and log a case with htc support. I have a company phone, and while the ringer is so low for me, my office will not purchase these phones for those of us who are on call. The ringer, speaker and headset volume is embarrassingly low. Report it with htc, let them know that we are unhappy. ill never buy a desire again if this remains unfixed, and make sure you tell htc how you feel, too.

I agree the sound can be tinny from the speaker, but then again I don't use it to listen to music (mmm headphones) as the speaker stands when I get a call, email or sms the speaker sound quality is top notch. If you play some of the default ringtones and notification sounds at full whack they sound amazing, even the extra ones downloaded from the HTC club website, it's just the encoding on standard audio that makes it sound bad.

And I have downloaded sounds from the zedge website and they sound fine, when I send an sms the roadrunner sound is amazind :D

Ok breakthrough... The one thing I preferred about the iPhone was the loudness and quality of using it as an MP3 Player....The HTC Desire was very low and not quiet as good....I found the solution !!!!! Download MixZing (free programme) which has a gain and a 10 band graphic Equalizer.....now its too loud lol ....SIMPLES!!!:)

I was unhappy with the volume on my desire for months but it is fine now.
Both heapdhone and speaker levels have improved (tested speaker in youtube and it's loads louder). I'm on Tmobile but I'd imagine many of the other operators updates probably do the same thing:

Quote from a previous thread:

If you're fed up of waiting you can always apply the update yourself. Did mine last night and it has seriously helped increase the headphone volume output on my TMobile Desire. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who has debranded or rooted etc but for the rest....

It does wipe all settings and data (as a factory reset would but including wiping the sd card I think) so a backup is a good idea. I backed everything I needed up then put a blank SD card in the phone for the update (or you could just make a copy of your SD card and copy it back across when the update has finished I suppose, you'd probably want to do this before gong through the intial settings screens as it asks you very early on if you want to restore).

Then just download the correct one for your provider, run, connect phone, follow on screen prompts. Easy as that.

Updates can be found here:

Obviously you do this at your own risk, I will not hold any responsibility for cock ups but it really is a straight forward process so I can't see as there's much to go wrong.

Most people who have rooted are on a newer version of the radios than those versions.
The latest version i have got hold of is 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08

My Desire is quieter than my girlfriends, and i have no idea why, they are identical orange phones, bought with in 2 weeks of each other, but on full volume through the stock player mine is quite clearly quieter than hers... i have played with all sorts of setting etc. but to no avail, is it more likely to be a faulty speaker than software problem?
