Hi,

I'm currently using HTC Touch HD with Win6.1 . I'm planning to move to android if I could find these Win6.1 equivalent applications. Hope senior android users could help me in this. Are there android equivalent apps for these.
1. Activesync - contact & calender sync
2. spb finance that sync with ms money
3. Creativenotes - to keep notes > equivalent to words in outline mode and more
4. textplus - software that suggest up to 12 words based on your chars input, so that you can quickly enter text
5. Garmin offline GPS software > can operate without phone signal anywhere
6. tethering - used as gateway to internet
7. bluetooth file transfer with PC

Hope forum members could point to the application that do the above

thank you.

Please do some of your own legwork. Seriously. There are a lot of threads discussing what you need. I will offer an olive branch.

Here are apps you need to look up that solve some of your needs:

Android natively does a lot of what your asking already. You need to do some of your own research and fact finding before you jump in.

I offer you this olive branch however, android, and the app market, can accommodate all of the needs you listed above, with the exception of syncing with ms money(maybe). There are plenty of other finance apps though.

Thank you for the reply.

Actually I've been browsing various android forum since early this year to gauge the readiness of the android OS to replaced my win mobile 6.1. I think the most difficult might be to find the replacement for my spb finance that sync with ms money. This is very important applications to me because I've kept the finance record for more than 10 years. So I need to be able to continue using it on both mobile device and desktop. Anybody have more answers or pointers?

As what I know so far, offline GPS applications also lacking.

They do have offline gps.... don't know how well it works though. Just do yourself a favor, and buy a standalone unit fot $100. Seriously. They work infinately better than any system on a phone.

As for money syncing, spb is startin to make stuff fr android so you may be in luck for the future.

I've to disagree with you on gps. I stopped using dedicated garmin gps 4 years ago, because it's more convenient using gps on pdaphone. It's more versatile and could search the address on your contact directly. When you travel you only have to take care only one device not two or more. Beside, actually the gps software is more advanced on pdaphone than on dedicated gps device (I refer to garmin device). Nowdays people looking for single device for everything. Two years ago when I went for holiday to Vienna, Switzerland, Paris and London I only used pdaphone for gps to look for interesting place, underground station, hotel, restaurant and etc. I only used dedicated gps for backup just incase something went wrong with my pdaphone with gps. And based on my experience using gps for more than 6 years, I think I will never go back to dedicated gps device anymore.

So when I decided to move to android device later, I'm going to make sure that there is already a good offline gps available.

Your problem was garmin. They don't make good nav units unless you buy high end. and if you get a phone call poof goes your gps. Unless your bluetoothed. And todays smartphones are more suseptable to lockups/crashes than standaone nav units, and standalone nav units get better satelitte reception(for the most part) as well.

Now what they need to do with standalone navs is add radar/laser detection, make traffic updates standard, and have complete syncing via bluetooth/wifi with a phone/laptop. I.e. I search google maps for a poi. I hit a button and its sent to my nav unit ready to go. Standalone navs also have better/more routing options than your standard phone gps.

But why stay with an already dead platform, for such a trivial feature when there are better nav units out there?

Some of the people that reply with things like "do your own legwork" or "I've answered this 4 times already" are not really helpful now are they? Honestly why do they bother? In regards to your questions about apps.. I can help you with some of them. As far as GPS, tethering and Bluetooth are concerned you can use CoPilot, iGo Myway or Navigon... all work offline. For your tethering needs you can use Android wired & wireless tether. Try Bluetooth File Transfer to round out these 3 categories. I use all of these and they work fine.. save the $100 on GPS and install an app on your phone. I've gone from Germany to Czech a few times with these apps and never had any issues. If you need help.. I will always give it if I can.

Actually its more helpful than just spitting out apps. What if people recommend an app that he doesn't like? Well that leaves a bad taste in his mouth. Also, while doing your own research, you learn more about the platform and its versatility and utility, and in turn get more out of your device. What we don't need, is one set of apps they rule the android market. Variety is a good thing, and one of the beautiful things about android is it's customization. We don't need another iphone-like platform.

To the op: if your dead set on using your phone as a gps, make sure you get one with a good gps chip in it. Research is key here. For instance, the gps on my moment is absolutely terrible and inaccurate.

On a side note, also to the op, I also came from winmo, the htc touch pro/touch pro2/mogul. For android I would stick with an htc device. I know I have a samsung, but it's something I wish I hadn't done. My hand was kind of forced though, as I shattered the screen on my tp2, and sold off my tp/mogul. So I needed a phone bad. And I didn't like the hero (no qwerty, and its slooow) and unfortunately the more serious bugs didn't appear until after my trial period was over =(. Guess that's the price I pay for being an early adopter.

I really like your attitude. At least I can start somewhere toward my goal, looking for winmobile equivalent software. There are tens of thousant of android software, so any pointer will be better of than nothing.

I still thinks offline gps software is the most important software for any pdaphone even it is less accurate than dedicated gps. I had not much issues using it for the last 4 years.

You will have problems finding anything to sync with MS Money. Everytihng else is out there.

Actually sync with ms money is not that important. The most important is good finance software on mobilephone that could sync with any good or full version of finance software on desktop and ALSO could import data from ms money. So my 10 years finance records can continue be used with different platform. Since the last 10 years I change the software from WINCE to Palm, than Palm to winmobile, BUT all sync with ms money. The platfrom and software is not important, but DATA must be able to continue to be used. Any idea/help if I want to move to android. Android seem to be excited and going to be vary popular in the future I think.

Actually after doing a quick search in market, I did find a highly rated app(only one though, its free but ad supported, which really isn't too big a deal) that says it can import from ms money pretty easy. Not sure if it can sync with it though....

Glad I could help. I am using an HTC Magic and I have flashed so many ROMs that I forgot what the stock one looked like. I can tell you though that I've criss-crossed Western\Eastern Europe and my GPS is dead on accurate. I've never gotten lost and depending on what extra features I need I select the navigation program that suits me at that instance (I have 3). I have a data connection but I don't need it when my maps are stored on my SD card. Besides, since I am bordered by 9 countries it doesn't make sense racking up international data rates while waiting for a map to load outside of Karly Vary (nice place by the way).

1. Activesync - contact & calender sync

It has activesync natively, there are also apps available if need be, like touchdown or K-9

3. Creativenotes - to keep notes > equivalent to words in outline mode and more

There are hundreds of note apps, all with different features so you are more than sorted here.

4. textplus - software that suggest up to 12 words based on your chars input, so that you can quickly enter text

swiftkey is exactly the same, its pretty scary actually! But you may also want to try swipe keyboards, which are potentially even faster than the guessing keyboards.

5. Garmin offline GPS software > can operate without phone signal anywhere

There are a few gps that work offline, but you have to pay for them. Google navigation is free, and i believe downloads the route before you set off, so u can use your home wifi to get the route for example.

6. tethering - used as gateway to internet

Bluetooth and wired tethering. Oh yeah, you can also make your phone a wifi hotspot, and attach multiple other devices wirelessly to share your phones internet.

7. bluetooth file transfer with PC

bluetooth and wirelessly

Apparently, android syncing with outlook is not so good atm. It only works with exchange or something. Nobody seems to like exchange, but I've never used itso I don't know. Word is that Android 2.2 will support outlook though.

That's the extent of my knowledge, I stopped using outlook a few years ago.

As for MS Money, didn't microsoft discontinue that last year? I'd be looking for a money replacement on the computer first, then find something that can sync with that. What about quick books?

I'm not using android yet because no replacement for "spb finance on pdaphone" sync with ms money on desktop. Quicken can replace and convert data from ms money BUT no application can be used on android pdaphone to replace spb fiance to sync with Quicken?. So I'm still holding my decision to move to android phone. If this thing can be solved I'm thinking of buying Dell Streak 5" for my next pdaphone. I'm still looking for the solution. If anybody have any pointer please response to this . Thank you

Sadly, as I have found, Android is no where near as flexible as WinMo when it comes to Syncing files and Outlook etc, even the latest HTC Sync for Documents syncing is only one-way, ie add a new doc on phone it does not get copied, edit an existing one on phone, it does not copied - pants! HTC has a looooong way to go before it catches up with WinMo!

I'm a recent convert to DropBox. I think it's the best thing since sliced bread!

There is an Android app for Dropbox.

I have the Captivate and QuickOffice for Captivate was free.

You can link to DropBox directly or through QuickOffice.

So now with QuickOffice and DropBox, files that need to stay sync'd between phone and computer do. If I edit a file in my DropBox on my phone, when I open that file on my computer, I view the edited file. That's because the file sits in the cloud and both the phone and the computer are accessing the same cloud file.

QuickOffice can also connect to GoogleDocs, which I've only used once or twice, but I can see how this would also be beneficial for collaborative projects.

Checkout DropBox and watch the video. I think you'll like the concept. It supports Google's "cloud" concept very well and may solve your sync issues.
