Actually, we did have a rotary phone that weighed a ton as well. The wooden one was the extension phone :) Really it was. You could answer calls on it but couldn't dial out.
That's not quite true. If you lifted the receiver off of the hook you got a dial tone. With practice you could place a call by clicking the hook the number of times for each number of the person you were calling. A number with a lot of nines and zeros was a real bear.
