Why is PDAnet slow?

Hi,

Okay I'm using PDAnet on my HTC magic and speedtest on my computer is reading 1.7 mbps. I am also sharing the connection with my xbox360 to get on live. But Live is laggy. What am I doing wrong.

Maybe the fact you are using xbox live while using pdanet is the reason it is slow. Maybe the Xbox is sucking up all the Bandwidth hence not leaving much for the internet on your PC ?

I'm not actually browsing the net while on xbox live. I'm only playing on xbox live with it being slow.

You're using PDANet to share over your phone a wifi connection that XBOX Live is running off of?

Yes, your games will be horribly laggy.

The 3G coverage that you receive on your phone doesn't have sufficient upload speeds to handle any type of online gaming, especially a first-person shooter. You could possibly play chess online? Plus, WiFi tether is a bit faster than PDAnet for me. You should check it out, search the market for "tether", and download "Keep android open petition!" Then just download the tether, grant it SU access, start it up, and connect via wireless network on your laptop. Still, wont make online gaming possible.

Playing FIFA 10 on xbox live using the 3g connection from the phone was not a terrible experience, but there was definately a noticeable consistent lag.

I was just wondering if there were any settings I could adjust that would help out. I thought since I was using 3g then perhaps I could ditch my home internet all together and just use my phone.

recently i have discovered why WiFi tether was faster. The shorter cable you use for the PDAnet, the faster it is. I used a 3" cable, a tiny tiny one and it was noticably faster. I mean, a lot faster lol.

Soda, do you mean a shorter Enthernet cable or usb?

I've been using PDA Net via usb tethering with my laptop to play my ps3 online (enthernet cable connecting Ps3 to laptop). Works ok with Modern Warfare 2, most matches are fine but some lack big style.

How do you WiFi tether with PDA net? Will that mean I can use my PS3 online without switch my laptop on?

For starters, 1.7mpbs is probably not what you're getting from XBL and even if you were, that's not much. Second, the latency on a cellular connection is way higher than on a dedicate dsl or cable modem, so doing anything that requires fast response times (games) will never be as good. Plus you're adding several translation layers (android -> pdanet -> usb -> pc -> etc.) to get your XBox on the Internet...that's probably not helping anything. I'm surprised it's working at all.

Yea I've been playing modern warfare 2 for a little while using Wifi Tether. I guess I'm just going to have to accept the fact that a shared 3g connection is just not suitable for gaming right now. I've heard that T-mobile is going to enhance their coverage and bandwidth in the near future so....maybe then.

where did you buy this 3 inch cable?
i actually have the htc hero. it might not have a cable that small

As far as the length of the cord goes it does not matter what length it is because its a constant feed from the laptop to the xbox. This does not work period due to the face that so many different things have to be gone through to get the connection to the xbox live server. (phone to laptop to xbox to xbox servers then back to xbox) it simply takes too much time. i have been trying to get this to run faster for months and it will not work smoothly no matter what you do. Sorry to burst your bubble but it just wont work.

Not true, I have played world of warcraft with my G1 tethered to my laptop and aion tethered to my desktop without any issues. So yes it works just fine but not for bandwidth heavy games like what xbox does.

I have found that it is fast enough to play Runescape. I wouldn't try anything too much better.
