I have just got my google voice invite and decided to use just my same cell number and not get a new google voice number. I have downloaded the GV app and everything seems to work fine but there is a voicemail icon in the notification tray at the top and when I click on it, it just sends me to the "the google voice....." What do I need to do to get the notification gone from the tray.

i had this same issue a few months back. somehow, you have to clear your verizon vm queue, cuz thats where the notification is coming from, since you used the same number, you may just want to ask verizon to delete your vm portion of your account and recreate if needed

Exactly what sort of horror and pain did you experience using Google Voice?

Well, since you asked:

A. Calls would ring phones that were clearly not enabled. Enabling/disabling did not help. Removing them outright did.
B. Calling my house from my GV enabled cellphone would send me right to Google Voicemail, regardless if the house phone was enabled or not. *73 on my cell did not fix the problem, nor did completely disabling voicemail and detaching.
C. People calling my number would end up in Google VM instead of Verizon VM - which I explicitly did NOT want. Again, Google VM was disabled everywhere, *73s dialed, etc.

It was just punishingly buggy for me.

The text portion is fantastic though. I just know I won't be able to get my friends and family to remember to text to a diff't number - it just won't happen.

You don't need to uninstall. Just disable conditional forwarding, delete the voicemail and re-enable.

*73 is irrelevant. Forwarding on your cell doesn't have anything to do with any forwarding on/to your home line.

People calling my number would end up in Google VM instead of Verizon VM - which I explicitly did NOT want. Again, Google VM was disabled everywhere, *73s dialed, etc.
There's no way that's a GV issue. GV doesn't handle forwarding. VZW does. Either callers were calling your GV number (in which case they'll end up getting GV voicemail no matter what) or forwarding wasn't properly disabled for some reason.

The point of the matter is this. I had only 1 phone active on my GV account. I did NOT have GV Voicemail active at all. People would call my house and all my phones would ring as if they called my GV number. If I erased all the phones out of my settings except my cell, the calls would end up in GV voicemail instead of Verizon. If I used my GV number to call the house (that was deleted from my settings), it would ring 2xs and go straight to GV Voicemail.

This should never happen. Something got corrupted with my account, I sent a trouble ticket in to Google, and gave up after some time.

Wait a second... are you saying that people calling your home *land line* number would cause other phones to ring as if they were calling your GV number?
