Update encrypted phone & I don't have a screen lock password. What do I do?

The latest android update that installed on my phone encrypted it. After restart it is now asking for my screen lock password. Its a new phone and I never set a screen lock password. It gives me 24 attempts to enter the screen lock password before it wipes all my data. Nothing is backed up yet, new phone. HELP PLEASE! It is a HTC 10 that I purchased new off ebay

"new" and "ebay" in the same sentence? Could be the HTC 10 isn't as new as you thought it was, and a previous owner set a password? I know we've had quite a few reports of supposedly new phones been sold by Ebay, and they've had Factory Reset Protection(FRP) activated on them or they've been carrier blacklisted.

Hi, are you sure it isn't getting you to create a screenlock password?

If you haven't already tried it, enter a password and see if you are asked to confirm it which is the standard procedure when creating a password.

One of the first things I do with a new device is set a screenlock, and when I got my HTC 10 towards the end of last year, I seem to recall the encryption/decryption procedure appeared after the first OS update but as I had already set up my screenlock it didn't cause a problem.
