Android 2.2 "Froyo" - Possible for Hero

All rumors are saying Froyo is optimized to be 450% faster than 2.1 , which isn't even out for GSM hero.

Do you think it will be possible to port 2.2 for the htc hero? I know it probably wont be 450% faster or anything, but will the HTC hardware be able to run it?

I'm certain there will be a vanilla version for the hero. Not sure about one with HTC Sense though.

I reckon this is what the delay has been all about.
HTC have secretly been working alongside Google so when we finally get our upgrade it won't be to 2.1 it will be to 2.2, which will be released simultaneously.

I doubt we'll get 2.2 to be honest.. not officially at least.

I think as Xtiro said, there'll be an ASOP version but not a Sense one at first.
I would imagine the Legend will get an upgrade to 2.2 though and I'm sure that would get ported to the Hero seeing as there are already ports of the Legend 2.1 build.

I'm thinking that the differences between 1.5 and 2.1 are much bigger than 2.1 > 2.2

Therefore I suspect someone will be able to fashion 2.2 with Sense 2.1 ontop for Hero, even if HTC do nothing (other than release GSM Hero 2.1)

Ok, I've seen that every HTC phone released this year will get the 2.2 upgrade. This will probably include the Legend. Based on this, I think it will be possible to get 2.2 on a Hero- if devs can get the 2.1 Legend software on the Hero, it could be possible to get Froyo. That is, if they ever release the update for Froyo...

And I really don't think that the devs will need to wait for HTC to cooperate...
based on existing 2.1 stuff already around I'm sure they'll be able to update the ROMs to 2.2 and deliver us with all the goodies that google showed today!

I doubt it to but it would be nice and make all us hero owners a little happy. But you would expect them to make all their owners happy with having the same OS on all their phones and updating at the same time. But if they are looking to please themselves (to sell more of the latest models) and only trying show off their latest phones by doing this is very selfish.

It's called "business". HTC have shareholders and other investors who demand a return. The painful truth is that updating the Hero nets HTC precisely zero in terms of profit. Plus in the cut-throat mobile telecoms market exposure is everything. Companies have to innovate to compete.

Of course I see why they are doing this, but by doing this it could also upset existing customers who was expecting an update (over a long period) and was held back because of this. Which would (as when word spreads) maybe make HTC a not reliable company to trust.

I was not fussy about changing my OS at first but as more phones has got the new 2.1 (or better) and more apps expect this OS then I seemed to want it then and was more excided the closer it came to the date. As the dates got later and later I just gave up and saw that it was after when the new LEGEND and DESIRE (which had the 2.1) which I assumed that they might have the 2.2 running on them two phones before the 2.1 was on the HERO. To make them be the upper class of the HTC range and catch people eyes for business.

I think it sounds like the LEGEND and DESIRE can now be updated to what ever latest OS is out but I

Providing updates has a direct impact to customer satisfaction and loyalty which converts to repeat customers. That is profits. Of course there should be some cut off point for updates. May be a year after product launch. It can be used as a marketing leverage. There will come to a point where Android will reach a level of maturity were updates will happen less often.

I'm sure there will be several unofficial 2.2 ROMs for the Hero and the Hero will cope fine. 2.1 already runs much quicker than 1.5.

Shareholders and investors should expect a business to retain and grow its share of the market. By neglecting existing customers, it becomes harder to do this, as you're chasing new customers to replace the ones you've pissed off. Perhaps it's a little bit easier to do in the mobile telecoms market, but as Nokia have learned, there comes a saturation point.

For HTC, the existing customers who eagerly expects Android 2.1 update for HERO is negligible. I personally know lot of people who own a HERO but doesn't even know the Android version they run and the latest version currently available in the market. I don't think we people here can manage to sink HTC corporate OR create a hole in their earnings by avoiding their handsets in future.
