Absolutely. Growing up we had a crystal radio and a huge piece of furniture that was a tube AM radio and a record player. No TV. I don't remember much about the crystal radio beyond it being off limits and resided in my parents bedroom.
I don't remember a radio, but my first scanner used crystals and you would go to the local radio shack to buy the crystals for the local police, fire, etc. Looked something like this

I think mine was wither 8 or 10 channels with the orange lights that lit up when that channel was being scanned. The lights doubles as toggles to turn on or off scanning on that frequency.
Still have a crystal receiver/scanner that used to pick up fire, police and ambulance, marine calls. Each crystal was designated for the separate air ways.
