So I finally installing 2.1 with all english menus...that worked in china.

However I cant get my contacts and calendar to sync with google.
The mail client works fine with no hitches.

But I cant add the google account...

when I enter in the full server name:
https://mail.google.com

the next button is greyed out (wtf??)

----the only way it will let me proceed is if I remove the https:// and then it try to connect.
but it then says :" unable to open connection to server"

Any help for what is more than likely an extraordinarily simple problem?

so lets knock it down to brass tacks.

-- if I want to sync my calendar and contacts with my google account...
what do i do?

if i enter Settings>Accounts and Sync>Add Account>:
-mail.google.com--no luck
- google.com- no luck

what next?

There is no typing in of anything, there should be an option listed there that says google (corporate is also there). Click Google and just enter in your gmail address and password and it will configure itself.

"should" that wonderful word...

going to settings/accounts and sync i see a single menu.
which involves 2 text boxes where you enter your email address and password.

from there I encounter the greyed out "next" box I ran into before.

once again, I'm downloading emails normallly, but contact list and calendar is failling to sync

Not too sure how to help you then, that is how it appears on my milestone. You could have a more serious problem if you cant see the google or corporate options at all. I would suggest backing up what info you need to and performing a factory reset.

after some digging I think this is a china specific problem.

Before I updated to 2.1 the Gmail app was the only point where I had to setup my username and password.
After that, the contact list and calendar syncd automatically.

However since the upgrade I no longer have the Gmail app, its been replaced by "Email" (yellow @ symbol) and I'm back to the uber crappy chinese app market.

I've managed to manuallly import my contacts from Gmail using a vcard, so the major problem is solved.
Its just annoying that I have to keep my calendars up to date manually aswell.

Will keep playing with it and see what happens.

It seems like I'm the only board member working in China....
