Huge system date usage

Hi guys,

I have a Razer Phone that has 64GB of storage.
I was starting to run out of storage mainly because the system data used 17Gb.

So i got a 200Gb SD card.

Now once the phone finished formating the card I ended up with 24Gb of app storage and 63 of system data.

If I click on apps storage it then says 'no apps'.

I am so very confused, what is taking all that space all of a sudden ? It's legit taking almost half of my new SD card.

I tried dialing *#9900# but it gave me an error message saying 'connection problem or invalid MMI code.'

Everything I try and all my research seems to be pointless. I have no idea what data is taking up this much space.

Can anyone help?
How do I get rid of this 'system data', i mean 63Gb.. what kind of mobile system uses that many storage ?

System Data is your internal memory and Os files. DO NOT DELETE IT. Also it shows no apps because you haven't moved any to it yet.

It's 1/3 ish everytime. Is this like a rule android has ? It need 1/3 for system data ?

Also why would I end up having system data both on my SD and internal memory. That makes a total of 81Gb of system data. That is huge.

Also, is no app has been moved to it, what is taking 24Gb ?

I don't know the answer, but no, there is no rule that Android grabs 1/3 of the drive for system data.

Just to be clear, you say it was originally allocating 17GB of the internal storage. I assume that's 17 out of the total of 64, rather than 17 from the user-accessible part of the storage. If so that "system data" probably really means "all system partitions". 17GB is big, but if Razer bloat their ROM the way some others do it's not impossible (there can also be confusion arising from decimal values binary and how manufacturers choose to report the space - many are quite unclear about what's really going on).

Now the SD card: you talk of formatting this, so does this mean that you have formatted it as internal storage? I've never done this so have no experience of how it behaves, but I've seen enough posts from people reporting confusion to know it's not always obvious - though I've never seen anything like this reported before.

A proposal: the built in storage menu is often confusing, so there's a couple of apps I'd use to get a clearer picture. One is a little app called Storage Truth (written by one of our moderators), which will simply show you the actual sizes and total space used/free on the user-accessible partitions of the device. The other is DiskUsage, which gives a graphical view of what is using the storage in a specified device or partition. Between them we should be able to get a more reliable and clearer picture of what's going on (though if it really has allocated part of the SD card to system data it won't let you see what's in there without root).

It might depend on what your phone formatted your external card to. If it uses Fat 32 (or is it exFat) then you'll lose a fair bit of space in the formatting process.
