I think I've found a article that explains MX Player Pro for Android's superiority to the free version but it's 5 years old and I don't think we had multicores back in the PPC days...
Oh, didn't see any mention of the superior features compared to the free version. But it's a mute point really as it is the go to app for video playback.
I used the free version of MX Player for a while and have been using the Pro version for years now. Never encountered any issues with codec support between the free or the Pro versions, it was always just an ad issue.
MX player is filled with trackers / spyware which no license will get rid of. If you want a clean program tha asks for no payment and has no trackers then I would suggest VLC https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-android.html
You can even download the apk directly on that page wihout vising the Google Spyware Store
Unless you have really specialist needs and don't care about infested apps...VLC will be all you need.
