Andre Previn, former Los Angeles Philharmonic music director and four-time Oscar winner, has died at 89.

This makes me very sad. Katherine Helmond, who played the hilarious Jessica Tate on Soap, has died at 89, from complications of Alzheimer's.

Although I enjoyed her on Who's the Boss and anything else I saw her in, she'll always be the hopelessly, hilariously naïve Jessica to me.

You and me both. She was wickedly funny in the role of Jessica and she was a delightful character actor.

Indeed. The great thing about the way she played Jessica was that although Jessica was hopelessly clueless much of the time, she was LIKEABLE, where she could have been gratingly annoying. Takes a talented actor to successfully pull that off.

Soap... what a show

It's one of those shows that, when looking back on it, you appreciate how ahead of its time it really was. I knew when it aired that it was groundbreaking, but the passage of time has put it in its proper place among great shows.

And she was part of the reason I got caught up in the show. RIP

There are some actors, like Kirk Douglas, who are 100+.

Besides, it's a lot about genes--what does your family tree look like? If it's full of 90+ people, you're on your way--unless poor lifestyle choices (smoking, obesity, drinking to excess, riding motorcycles on freeways without a helmet) say otherwise.

You can't beat the genes. But for me it's about quality of health as you get older, and I believe that lifestyle choices have a big effect on that.

Janice Freeman, who competed on The Voice, has died at only 33, apparently from Lupus. She leaves behind a husband and child.

We all did. When we heard that paramedics were at his house, and then he had had a stroke and was in the hospital, no one thought he'd DIE from it. Young, fit, you just don't expect that, considering it's common to hear of much older people who rehabilitate after strokes.

There aren’t a lot of details about Luke’s stroke, other than 911 responded to a call about a possible stroke. Not sure how much time elapsed between symptoms and the call or how long overall it was before he was treated.

According to the local news I'm watching (on KCBS), Perry was responsive when the paramedics arrived. He quickly deteriorated. Doctors sedated him to give his brain a chance to recover, but it had been a massive stroke, and its damage was done.

Former contestant on Australian Idol, Kate Cook, has died at 36, and the subtext of the reports is that she took her own life.

That's so sad.

I’ve struggled with depression more than once in my life, so I can appreciate the overwhelming, seemingly never-ending-sense-of-hopelessness spiral into which one can get sucked.

Me too, buddy. I was officially diagnosed as clinically depressed as a teenager, but had felt that way as far back as I could remember. At 5 or 6, I first thought about suicide. After I had my daughter, also as a teen, I suffered major postpartum depression (not psychosis, thankfully). I've spent years, and countless thousands of dollars, on therapy. I'm now well-controlled on medication.

What worked for you, @rootabaga? I'm assuming you're doing well now. Please let me know if that's not the case--and my PMs are always open for you.

If you’re struggling in that way, just remember that so long as you are here, however hopeless things may seem, however dark it may appear, there is always, *always* a pinpoint of light. Please, just keep looking for it, and then focus on it with all of your might.

Two people very dear to me couldn't see that pinpoint of light. My close friend, a Gulf War Marine veteran, ate his gun on September 26, 2007; my brother, an Air Force veteran and medically retired from the LAFD, did the same on July 24, 2014.

Just before I came here, I read a developing story--a 13-year-old boy killed himself at school. So tragic...
