Help Nexus 5 - Can't mount /cache/

A good day everyone,

Because my little brother drops his phone so his touché screen didn’t do anything anymore we had to buy a new phone for him.

We found a good as new Nexus 5 at a auction. After it arrived by mail eh booted it up and it seems to be working fine. But after I gave it to him and he turn it on again it keeps hanging at the google loading “balls”. After entering into recovery mode and trying to clear the /cash partition I got the massage “failed to mount /cache (invaled argument), “Can't Mount /cache/…..”, “Can’t open /cache/……” multiple times.

I already tried:

- Re flasing (needs root)

- Sideload (need’s a working /cache)

I can’t get the devise rooted because every guide expects you to reboot the device and start into android. A thing that my device doesn’t do.

I’m sure that the solution is somewhere out there, but I can’t find it.

Could you help me?

by sideload do you mean this:

that and rooting both need to have usb debugging turned on inside your phone. unless you did this before this happened, then you will not be able to use adb or fastboot to accomplish firmware update or root your phone.

Agreed. I loved my N5, but when it died recently I decided to get something a bit more up to date.

I dit a factory reset again. But I get the massages:

Supported API: 3

E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)

--wiping data…
formatting /data…
E: failed to mount /cache (invalid argument)
etc…

So that doesn’t work.

Yes, I thought that I read that somware else. The OS is completely stock and not configured what so al. so that is not enabled, so I hoped that there is some other way.

Nexus 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 are both phones that have been discontinued, aren't receiving support, time to move on.

You’re partly right. But it is beter than the Samsung galaxy 3 he is using now. So I hoped I could fix this.

As the phone appears to be in a non-functional state, you could try rooting it and installing a custom ROM.
This is a very rootable phone, and there's plenty of information on the web detailing how to do it.

is it possible? usb debugging is not turned on on the phone. will adb and fastboot work in this situation?

Oh yeah, there is that step. OP may have bought a brick then.
