The lead balloon ventures ahead of the pack, to warn the other balloons of any danger.

My choice has been whittled down to one (maybe): the RAM 1500 I was going to buy got sold before I could secure it.

I was curious about the choice you had between a 51k mls GMC Ram 1500 (which is now gone) and a new F150. I obviously heard of the F150 of old, but don't know US vehicles in general.

So just wondering is 51,000 miles considered just run in if it's all freeway miles, and was that GMC a 2017 / 2018 model. Is the 2019 GMC much more expensive than a 2019 Ford. I only looked at this and some images:

Balloons? That's a good suggestion. Lead balloons would be much more resilient to damage, but obviously (using good Irish logic) would need a lot more air inside them. Wouldn't puncture easily though. I think I've solved that one :p

So, the 2018 F150 Extended cab had an MSRP of $41k, but it was heavily discounted due to the Memorial day sales. Unfortunately (or not), they couldn't bring the price down to my budget, despite all that the sales guy tried.

Compared to the 2017 or 2018 RAM 1500, it sat a little lower, and it was kind of tight in the cabin... cozy I'd call it. The 1500 is roomier.

So, let's back up a second:

I went to the Dodge dealer first, and found a really nice 2018 RAM 1500 with 8,700 miles on it. The sales guy bypassed it because he read it as 87,000! I backed him up and asked him if that really was the mileage. Turns out yes, it was only 8,700 and almost within my budget. We took it for a test drive-- first thing we noticed was it was loud. The wife was worried it had engine trouble, hell, I was worried it had engine trouble, until I realized that it was just a modified exhaust system. It drove good, had room for my 20-yr-old in the back, only other issue was no hitch receiver.

Then we looked at a 2017 RAM 1500... same vehicle, but one year older and 51,000 miles. That one was priced within budget, but it needed steps... easy fix.

Then we went to the Ford dealer to see what they had. Their sales guy showed us a couple out-of-range offerings, then showed us the deeply discounted 2018 F150.

The choice fell down to two offerings: a new 2018 F150, or the '17 GMC 1500 with 51k. We decided to sleep on it.

So the next morning, the plan was to go with the '17 model GMC, silver. It fit well into our budget, and the extra would go toward those steps the wife wanted. I called the sales guy and told him, and he said he'd get it to the cleaning rack.

An hour later, he calls, saying the truck was sold before he could get it. I called the Ford guy and asked him to prep the F150-- smaller, but new, and nearly half off because of the sale.

We go to the dealership, only to find out that it also had sold out from under us. Luckily, they had an identical model. Two and a half hours later, we get to the bottom line, and it was several thousand over budget. They couldn't get it down within our means.

Shit.

So, I called my Dodge guy again and asked if the first RAM--the 2108 with 8,700 mile and a nice Blue color--was still available. Yes. Can you get it out the door for <$1k over budget>? He said, "I will make them do it".

Another two and a half hours, and I've got a very noisy (the previous owners had chopped the muffler off and installed a resonator) and large truck. I am now off to find a receiver so I can pull a trailer next weekend.

Congrats too. Pretty dam new truck in a nice colour. I'm sure a muffler refit in the future is doable. Fwiw the Ram seemed better in pics and from what I read, interior, size etc. A class above.
