We Need No Stinkin Headphone Jack

Yet another flagship without a headphone jack, according to the rumors. That definitely seems to be the trend of late but that leaves a lot of quality headphones in the dead device drawer. I switched to BT for my tunes and notifications a few years back so I'm not affected. However, after following the rumors and release of the Note 10+ a month back, I noticed a number of people that were not all that pleased about losing the headphone jack option. What's your thoughts? Would the lack of a jack sway your buying decision?

I own a phone without a jack (Pixel 2), not because it doesn't matter to me but because I had to balance it against other factors.

Samsung dropping it in the Notes is a bad sign, and the fact that they removed it from the Tab S6 shows that the argument about space in the device is simply a lie: it's about increasing margins, nothing else.

It's all but a foregone conclusion the headphone jack is dead.... and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I hardly listen to any music, so I personally won't miss it, but I'm not seeing some great benefit, or amazing new feature/technology they put in phones instead.

I'm not either. The jack can't cost jack lol but it does command a certain amount or real estate. The absence of the jack is following suit with the other big sellers. I think we had better get over the jack. I am a bit alarmed at the lack of SD slot and the minimal internal storage of the Pixel. I hope the rumor mill is grinding misinformation there.

I have owned a Sammy S8+ for the past 2.5 years and have yet to use the jack. It doesn't bother me at all that it's falling out of favor. I'd like for them to extend my BT range but a jack.. meh

yeah a jack is not something i go out looking for. as long as my bt headsets work and sound good to me, it will not sway me from purchasing a device. i just hate when everyone else follows apple. you can also thank apple for the non-removable battery we all have now.

i kind of got used to it when i had the note 5 which did not have an sd card slot. it was the same year that i relied heavily on google photos.

Google were the first android manufacturer to remove the SD slot (Nexus S) and for a few years pushed hard for all manufacturers to drop it. Most did this for 1 or 2 cycles of devices then reverted. I always wondered whether it would have been different if they'd all done it at the same time so people didn't have an alternative.

More recently it's the BBK brands (OnePlus, Vivo) who have been pushing this approach. So far Samsung have only done it with one model, and I hope that stops there.

As a critical listener? For me? The cheapest wired headset fairly much beats out the quality of BT. Just like vinyl beats out digital. It's fuller. We pulled out my late wife's vinyl albums and we all could hear a big difference. Analog is better for reproduction. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges, but with BT, you're getting that mathematically compressed and reduced mp3 (or whatever other compression protocol it is) garbage. I like real music. That's said, I also use BT. I guess I'm going the way of all flesh with this.

I think that was also Apple. They caused a lot of uproar over that. I used to walk around with an extra wire, now I have to walk around with an external battery and a wire. Ty apple.

I was very pissed when their was no headphone jack simply because I prefer wired then having to worry if my headset will die

Some BT audio devices are lossless now, no mathematical compression at all. So the quality should be as good as wired. My Huawei Freebuds 2 are lossless with my Huawei phone. I believe it's phones and devices that support Bluetooth 5.0, can do lossless audio.

Would be interested in real world reviews/comparisons of that.

For most, they won't notice or care, but will still complain. So it's a balancing act for sure.

Have yet to successfully use BT. First experience with it was when in the presence of someone who could not get it to work and they needed it at the time. I have kept a negative bias since then. I use the headphone jack on my devices for privacy while listening and now I find myself looking for it, just like I also look for CD/DVD players to be built in on laptops and I have discovered I like backlit laptop keyboards. As long as I can find these features, I will pay for them and avoid those products that don't give me what I want. Storage is not an issue for me at this time. If it ever gets to be on my radar, I can imagine I will have an opinion there too.

Haven't Bluetooth 5.0 spec products reached the US yet? And the POTUS45 hasn't completely banned Huawei yet has he?
