Post-Announcement Thoughts? Who's getting one?

So now that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL have been officially unveiled and the official full specs posted, what do you think?

I was really impressed by the camera-related stuff. That super-magic-zoom that they demonstrated was straight nuts - I really want to couple that up with a spotting scope and see what happens. The astrophotography bit also looks crazy cool. That's something I've always wanted to get into but didn't have the equipment. How nuts would it be to carry the equipment in my pocket??

I'm not sold on Face Unlock though. I'm sure it works a lot better than the old "Trusted Faces" thing but I can't help but think that it won't be as quick and reliable as the trusty "Pixel Imprint" fingerprint sensor - no matter how optimized it gets to be.

What are your thoughts?

It will be interesting to see what they do for a 4a presumably in the spring. If it gets the camera upgrades but ditches the face unlock / radar stuff in favor of the traditional Pixel Imprint setup that could be seriously compelling. I think I might actually prefer that over the just-announced gimmicks.

I'd like to get 2 years out of the 3a so I can spend money on other gadgets, but there's 6 months of potential drops between now and then, so who knows. :p

Did we get wireless charging confirmed?

Also HATE not having fingerprint. I so love using that for damn near every app that requires me to log in. Will all of them support face unlock?

For the price, and with right upgrade deal, I may jump on this. My wifes Pixel 2 XL is paid off, and they have a $450 credit deal, so she's definitely getting it.

I'm on fence though since I have the 3 XL 128gb

Yep, the specs indicate "Qi-certified wireless charging".

Sure - they just have to support the Biometrics API that was introduced with Android 9 instead of the Fingerprint API which it replaced. If they implement the new API and target Android 10, Face Unlock will be automatically supported. I'm sure the app developers will get on that ASAP - after all, it only took them years to adopt fingerprint auth.

At least there's hope.... Still, was just getting used to Pixel Fingerprint.... Only my second phone to have it at all...

We have a 2 & 2XL in our household, so we're planning to get 4's when the price drops a bit. But your question about logging into apps using the fingerprint now is a huge question for me. I hope they'll all support face unlock but I'm wondering the exact same thing you are.

Have you considered a Pixel 3a? If you don't need all the bells and whistles it's a great phone, my favorite so far.

I have, but since we typically keep our phones for about 2 years I'm not keen on buying year old phones now, then we'll want to upgrade in a year instead of in 2, & it seems like we'll spend as much or more doing that. I mean, I've thought that would be one way to keep a fingerprint reader but I'm not opposed to newer tech, I just want to make sure it'll work as well as the fingerprint reader does. I'm hoping within the next couple months the prices will drop & some initial bugs will be worked out.

hello all an old one here I am coming from a nexus 6p and am getting the new pixel 4 so this should be a step up for me. I understand all have issues with the battery life on the pixel 4 but folks right now if I surf the web do a few texts from a full charge 4 hrs latter I am at 27% of battery left so if as some are saying the battery on pixel 4 goes form 6:30 am to getting home from work around 5 pm ish and its down to I think they said 20 something of battery left that's hoop n hollers for me!!
Lastly I feel like I'm losing a good friend leaving the nexus 6p it has been a good phone but battery is going and google keeps sending app updates to it that are for the pixel I know this for fact as I go into apps updated and within the app it has wording some features only will work if your running 9.0 or higher and we all know 8.1 something is last nexus 6p was updated to.

Congrats! The 6P was a fantastic phone (one of my all-time favorites), but the Pixel 4 should be a significant step up.
so far I like it but I wish they left the back arrow as of yet I have not found an easy way of closing the actual settings page other than swiping each page back until I find the home page again. so if one of you know of a quick way to close with one swipe I'd gladly read and use it.
a simple X in page would work for me laughing loudly on that comment.

DUH I just figured it out I need to remember to swipe from bottom left corner of phone it sends the page to?? but its totally gone from main screen. a learning curve so much to remember on how to do it all. so if google so big on assistant/voice why not go all the way and just make a voice UI totally you say open chrome when done you say close chrome simplicity 101 not high tech or at least in my thinking.

I don't mind the bezel at all ... at least not top and bottom. My Nexus 6 had substantial bezels all around and it has been my favorite and longest kept phone to date. I stayed away from the notched phones. They didn't excite me.

I quickly got used to the notch on the 3 xl, but having set up the 4 for the wife, the bezels doesn't bother me at all.

Got mine today. Setup/transfer was a breeze and as far as I can see EVERYTHING transferred except for my Nova desktop, but that was easy enough to backup and restore.

Gestures are easy enough, too. Got most of them right away and there is enough built-in help to get anyone the rest of the way. Too bad they didn't include the 4k fisheye selfie cam.
