Your entitlement--or lack thereof--to SSDI has
absolutely nothing to do with your relationship status. You're either entitled to it--by virtue of meeting its qualifications, e.g., having accumulated sufficient, recent work history -and- paying into SS--or you're not.
SSDI = Social Security Disability
Insurance. Just like any other insurance, you have to pay for it. Either you did or you didn't. I
know I did, for 31 years. Your right to collect its benefits is not affected by having a girlfriend/spouse.
Perhaps you're actually receiving SSI--Supplemental Security Income--and its benefits
are affected by relationship status. I don't know--I have way too many assets to qualify for it, so I've never had reason to look into it.
If I were you, I'd be on the phone
first thing tomorrow morning to have your lawyer clarify which benefit you're receiving. If you're really getting SSDI, and your attorney thinks it's affected by your relationship status, find another lawyer
immediately.
