Who still listens to radio...

Our house has speakers in every room, as well as the garage and garden, cabled back to a DAB/FM tuner and 4Gb* hard drive CD player/recorder. I quite often listen to BBC Radio 2, the local radio station or one of the many music only stations.

*Edit :- I thought I'd got it wrong, the audio recorder hard drive is 80Gb!.

yep i installed a sirius radio for my car last year. been listening to that or bluetooth my music from my phone. it has been a very long while since i listen to local radio stations.

i remember listening to morning radio like it was a religion. Mark and Brian were my favorites. to bad they sort of called it quits. my second was Kevin and Bean. both shows played here locally in LA. but i think they were also syndicated.

I may have cried when Mark and Brian said farewell. :( The end of an era for sure. Even when I was living out-of-state, I managed to listen to them. And, of course, any time I was here visiting, I was tuned in. Do you remember their Bob's Big Boy stunt? It's fuzzy, but I think they were going to dress a Big Boy statue like Elvis, and put him on top of a building...somewhere? My husband and I were leaving that day, but really wanted to see it...alas, the plane wouldn't wait for us... *sigh*

I was never into Kevin and Bean, but my helper was.

Do you remember KLSX, @ocnbrze? It was an amazing classic rock station--old school, album-oriented rock, deep cuts rarely played on radio. It put all other classic rock stations to shame, and I mean in the multiple states I lived in! Too bad it didn't last longer.

To answer the OP's actual question: the only time I listen to radio now is on my way to/from medical appointments. It's usually KLOS, but my helper has introduced me to a few other stations I didn't even know existed! :D

I can remember the family listening to radio as THE entertainment when I was little. I don't remember what we listened to... music and a few shows I imagine. My parents purchased a TV before I started school and the home radio became a thing of the past. By the time I reached high school, mid sixties, FM radio with the first station West of the Mississippi went on air. Every kid was scrambling to get a FM receiver. :) It was a big deal. It went from big deal to everyday to so what in the decades that followed. It was once a very important part of my generation's social life and entertainment. Broadcast radio has enjoyed a great run. There are just more enjoyable listening options out there these days.

Been streaming since I began Androiding. Is that a word?

It is now.

Anyway, FM really has never come in very well for me anywhere I have lived (Detroit, Cincinatti, out in the sticks, etc.) unless I wanted to listen to cousin kissin' Country or (C)rap.

I quit listening to the radio altogether way back in the '90s when most channels began to constantly play that horrible 'Grunge' crap played by heroin addicts that all sounded the same.

It's unbelievable that they STILL play that ear rape.

I listen to the CB more than I listen to FM.

FM = Forget it, Man

I am old enough to remember when WLS (Chicago) played music, and I would listen to Doctor Demento (they're coming to take me away ha ha, they're coming to take me away ha ha, to the happy home with flowers and trees and chirping birds and they're coming to take me away, hahahahaha!) and laugh like crazy.

I lived on the east side of Lake Michigan and it came in loud and clear.

WLS has 50,000 watts, and being AM it can skip and I listened to it at night even after I moved to Detroit.

So you never liked Nirvana then? I can't recall that genre been played on the radio around here. Although a lot of late 60s music was written and played by drug addicts.

BTW is CB still a thing?

Dr. Demento as well as Casey Kasem Coast to Coast show were always a weekly listen.

I tried to google up one of the original DJs of that FM station I mentioned above but had no luck. The station was KEYN and his raido name was Jay Robert Dark sp? His real name was Richard Hastings and my little group of friends became good friends with the guy.
He often mentioned us on the air and graced us with the station's seconds or whatever they were called. (records they had played enough times that they were worn) He left KEYN and took an administrative position at KOMA in Oklahoma city. From there we lost contact.

I typed the drivel above as an example of how cool broadcast radio was at one time. Listening audiences were loyal to their station and it's personalities and the DJs acknowledged their followers. A far different time.

I remember just riding into town listening to Casey Kasem too :) On and off too throughout time itself :)

I forgot to say that I have a ton of commercial-free music channels on DirecTV, covering every imaginable genre. But I don't listen to it any more, either. And before I got sick, I had a Rhapsody account that I used heavily, but canceled it once I was well enough to think about it.

When I used to have people over for lunch or birthdays, I did play DirecTV's swing channel (music from the '40s), or jazz, softly in the background. It set a nice mood, without being intrusive. You could hear the music without having to SHOUT over it to be heard. :D
