not a clue. so we get this pretty much daily and we mostly guess what the icon is. there are millions upon millions apps out in the world and most have their own icon notifications......that is a lot of icons!!!!!!! so unless it is something well known like facebook or youtube, it is like finding a needle in the haystack.

but you never know, you might get lucky and someone will recognize it.

the only true way of knowing is looking at the phone's notifications to find out. but as in most cases, the phone in question usually is not accessible.

Can you tell us the circumstances of your situation? These questions usually come with a heart shaped icon and are found on the device of a significant other. In this case it looks more like the D-Pad (Directional Pad) Gamepad of some sort of Gaming app or notification. That's just a guess, though.

Try looking through your Settings >> Apps menu for any app that might have the same or similar icon. Most of the time an icon in your Notification bar is at least in some way related to its app.
A lot of them are, but my favorite example, Twitter, really illustrates that some are wildly different.

This is its icon in System Settings:

But look at the notification icon when someone 'likes' your tweet:

Yep, our old friend, a heart!

And this is the icon when someone retweets you:

Looking at either of those, you'd never guess they had anything to do with Twitter, based on its system icon. And those aren't the only icons Twitter has, just two I had handy.

When you do the math, considering the bazillion Android apps that exist, it's mind-boggling how many notification icons there are!

Think that might be my standard answer from now on to any "what is this heart" on screenshot question? ... yeh, someone liked your Tweet
