Help System Update error and Slow phone

i am receiving a system update error during reboot process. The phone never completes the system update and simply says "error" after the progress bar reaches axppx 20 % across the screen, green engine-like image appears, and at that point the phone reboots without completing the update.
September 2018 is the latest update that the phone successfully completed, and currently the phone boots, updates apps and downloads very slowly. Apps update with somewhat strange behavior - very slowly, but with strange and sudden completion at times.

The phone is an LG Aristo 2 Plus. I have 1.1 GB of ram and 51% memory available after running the pre-installed cleaning app. All hardware is reported to be working fine, and I notice no malfunction other that those previously mentioned. The phone operated faster, and system updated fine when I first got it from the T-Mobile store 16 months ago.

Any idea how I can get this phone to update the system and with better speed?

Thanks for that reply. I have been told to reset in the past. This is my first smartphone and it seems unreliable, and too much work for this kind of tech. Resetting the phone seems so backward, and seems to defeat the purpose of having one. If anyone else has an idea, let me know.
