So I'm coming from the LG Voyager and was hoping there is going to be a way to get all my contacts from my phone on the DROID without having to pay Verizon to transfer it. You guys know how this is going to work since it will probably be an issue that is going to pop up? Thanks!

I'll just do it manually. It's a good way for me to get used to the keyboard/interface. Also I can weed out all the people that I really don't want their number, lol.

At first I was going to give Bitpim a try, but what you say is a good idea. Get some time in on the keyboard (both hard and soft) before getting into hardcore use of the phone...

shouldnt they just transfer for it for free when you go there and purchase the upgrade??

everytime ive gone there and done that they plug it into that little box they got and swapped them. unless they are different file formats and wont go over unless you do it manually?

id prefer to do it manually, this way i only put the numbers in i REALLY need

Here's a free way to do it:

  1. Using BitPim get the contacts from your phone.
  2. Export them as a vCard (File>Export>vCards...)
  3. Change the Dialect to "Apple" and click OK.
  4. In your Google contacts (Google Voice, Gmail, etc.) click import and browse to the file you just created and click Import.
That's it you should now have all your contacts in your Google account ready for you to get your Droid.

Just our of curiosity, if you sync your gmail contacts, can you pick a specific group to sync?

For example, I have two major groups:

Group A = list of professors and their e-mail addresses plus other random people (I would never call these people and don't want them in my phone)

Group B = the people I would want in my cell phone (family + friends)

Is it possible to sync with gmail, and have it pull ONLY the information from Group B? Or will I have to sync all groups?

Hmmm - been using BitPIM for a long time now (ever since I moved to VZW, actually) and I have a lot of contacts and old SMS stored. I suppose I can get it to work by using the above procedure....

Time to give it a whirl, me thinks....

OK, so it worked exactly as described in Big Pat's post http://androidforums.com/79902-post10.html

Thanks!

Now I am ready for next week!

I just saw the answer to your question and you can pick which groups you want to sync with.
