Sprint offers free Call Forward for Google Voice?

I remember last year that Sprint was going to announce free call forwarding for google voice. is this true? Any updated info? I've never followed up on that news but now that I have the Evo, I want to take advantage of the Google Voice App.

I thought call forwarding was always free on cell phones? We use it all the time on verizon and AT&T to forward cell calls to a landline at the ranch where there's no cell coverage

Conditional Call Forwarding is free. I am not sure about Unconditional. That is to say you can forward your calls to Google Voice on no answer (meaning forward to Google VOice mail after 3 rings) as opposed to every call coming in getting automatically forwarded to the Google Voice number.

Hmm basically but double check with Sprint. Here is a snipet of the press release from October of last year and a link to the realease:

While most cell phone companies don't charge a call forwarding MONTHLY fee, they all charge double minutes, once for the call coming in, and once for it going back out.

The deal the OP is referring to had to do with using Google Voice - Voice Mail ONLY with your existing cell phone number. Google cut a deal with all the carriers to eliminate the double minutes (the outgoing leg) when calls rolled to the Google Voice Mail and with Sprint to eliminate an additional 10 cent a minute surcharge.

So, using Google Voice - Voice Mail INSTEAD OF your Sprint Voice Mail is now "free", meaning it costs the same. (Incoming calls still use minutes when they go to voice mail, as they do on every carrier.)

now that I have the Evo, I want to take advantage of the Google Voice App.

It is worth mentioning that all OUTGOING calls made with the Google Voice app use a local gateway. It handles things similarly to the way a calling card works, just automated. The downside to this is that the outgoing calls using the app NEVER count as "Any Mobile Any Time".

Folks have had some success adding the gateway number to their "Sprint-to-Home" or "Pick 1 / Pick 3" plans effectively making all outgoing calls free. You just have to watch the gateway number (it is displayed) for each call because there's no guarantee it will never change.

There are also some 3rd party Google Voice dialers that work the same way using the web page to dial works, Google calls you, calls your destination, and then conferences the calls together. By adding your Google Voice number to Sprint to Home (etc), you can again get free outgoing calls, and if you tell Google Voice to always display YOUR phone number for incoming calls (So you don't see the CallerID of the person calling you) it makes those calls free as well.

I have my Google Voice number set as one of my Pick 3 and give it to all my clients now I never have to worry about going over minutes.

I'm not sure if Pick 3 is still available, but all its worth a shot...try calling Sprint's retentions dept and see what they say.

The problem with programming the gateway number as a favorite is that it often changes. In my experience, it changes monthly. To get around this sucking up minutes, make all outbound calls from their web page using the web browser.

It's too bad that the app doesn't figure out some way to avoid using a changing gateway number.

Ive used google voice for my voicemail before, works fine and was not charged. I did not personally like it so I axed it. It does work though. There are settings in google voice that you change to make this happen.

If you are short on Friends and Family or Pick 3 numbers there is also a way to call your GV number and make an outgoing call by pressing 2 I think.

An extra step, but at that point you don't have to worry about that local number google calls to place a GV call from your handset.

I just use it on one of my "home" numbers and it works great. Looking forward to using the app instead of having to call. I have been using the GV voicemail for a couple of months and no extra charges.

If you use the app you will need to add the access number as a Sprint to Home ($5.00 per month) or you will be using airtime minutes to call out. Also, depending on how you configure GV you most likely will be charged airtime on incoming minutes as well.

If someone with a sprint phone calls my google voice number and I pick up with my sprint phone will it be considered a "sprint to sprint" minute or a land line (i.e. will I be using anytime minutes when going through google voice)

All call forwarding is included at no additional cost for customers on the Simply Everything Plan. For other service plans, calls forwarded immediately (Unconditional Call Forwarding, *72) costs $0.20/min. Forwarding calls to another number if the person who's calling you gets no answer or a busy signal is free. This is called Conditional Forwarding (*73, *74 or *28).
