Flu shots

I haven't had a flu for years. I honestly can't recall the last time I was sick like that, but with the grandkids crawling all over me with their runny noses, I've been getting more head colds. If a hug means a cold, then pass the tissues!

I have done the flu shot a couple of times when they predicted a really active or severe flu strain/season and this year being 2020, I figured it just tempting fate not to get one. Besides, my doctor is really cute.

My wife does the sick stuff and I watch. (knock on wood) I am never ill. I'll likely fall over dead some day but I don't have the every day stuff and the other stuff that everyone suffers from. All my buds are on blood pressure... sugar sort of meds. Some worse than others. I've been extremely fortunate to miss out on all that pill popping and shooting up regiments.

I don't mean to tempt fate but to introduce any sort of antibodies just seems like I'd be flirting with disaster.

My father-in-law was the same way. I can't remember ever seeing him ill up until the time he was dead at 89. OTOH I know people younger than I am who are constantly battling something. Now that I think about it, my grandfather rarely had an ill day in his 93 years, although Alzheimer's got him in the end. My grandmother took a pharmacy every day since she was 60 and she lived to be 92. So who knows?

Well, I get my flu shot from my Pharmacist, but she's pretty cute too. I even married her. :) I keep my marriage young by letting her stab me once a year. :p

you are a VERY sick man. ;) I'll get mine in about a month, so it lasts through the end of the flu season. Then I'm scheduled to get the CoronaVirus shot. ;)

When is the Corona shot being released? I haven't kept up with the news. I hope it will give everyone peace of mind.
It's out now ...

The statements from the people involved in development and testing all point to next year at the earliest, and probably not early next year. Even that will be unprecedentedly quick. At present we don't know whether any of the vaccines under development are sufficiently effective to be worth distributing, nor do we have the sort of safety data we'd want before doing so.

What many people don't realise is that few vaccines are 100% effective anyway, so having a shot doesn't mean you are certain to be immune. The idea is to make enough people sufficiently immune that it breaks transmission. This is why a high uptake of any vaccine is also important, but it also means that a vaccine that does not confer immunity to a sufficient fraction of people could make things worse: most people given a vaccine will assume they are immune and hence life can go back to normal, but if not enough of them gain immunity to break the chain of transmission this could start another epidemic. And that's one of the reasons you have to do this properly, which takes time.

Of course flu jabs are a special case here: there are many types of flu, so there isn't one universal vaccine, but it also takes time to produce enough vaccine for a mass programme. So the virologists work hard early in the year to identify the strains that are most likely to produce the following winter's epidemic: if things don't work out that way, then that year's vaccine may be ineffective against the strain that actually circulates. So even a routine-sounding thing like the winter flu vaccination programme is rather trickier than it sounds.
