Should I still get the Eris

So Ive been researching the Eris and playing around with my girlfriends. But today I read something about the end of life notice for the eris. I like that I can get it for 20 bucks at best buy or for 70 at verizon. I dont want to pay the 200 for the incredible, and I don't need a phone that intense. I really like the eris, but an afraid about the future for me owning an Eris if its not being made anymore. Is it worth my upgrade and cash?

Definitely. Get it. It's worth it, even with the small list problems...been the LEAST problematic phone I've ever had. The price is definitely right for what you get...GREAT DEAL especially for $20...I paid $99 for two back in December of 2009.

The Eris is an amazing phone for $20 , if you dont' want to spend $200 for an incredible I would definetly get the Eris.

The technology on phoens is advancing so fast that even the Incredible will be outdate by the end of the year. I loved my time with the Eris but I do think the Incredible is worth the extra money especially since I've heard some sites have it for as little as $99

Why do you care about the future of the Eris? I just don't get this. It's not like it's going to stop working some day. All phones go obsolete. If you only have enough for the Eris, you can't go wrong with it. However, if you can wait a bit and save up $200 for the Incredible, it's a much better choice.

If you look at the cost diffrence over the new contract it's almost nothing . The Incredible will cost you about $7 more a month then the Eris over the life of the contract.

The eris is a great choice. Shouldn't matter if they're not making them anymore. Just be grateful you still had a chance to grab one while they were available

There is so much you can do with the eris. Look into rooting if you do get it.
Not a must, but definately worth looking into.
But even if you just prefer keeping your phone stock...
very good phone for the price.

Please don't beat me for saying this in an Eris forum, but if I had to do it again, I might consider the Moto Droid to be honest... That is, if you can live with carrying around a giant brick in your pocket. I believe the price difference these days is pretty minimal...

Owned it for half a month, didnt like it. I like the smaller design of the Eris and it looks better IMO. Might go buy the eris at lunch today

I've not messed with it much, so I'm not positive, I've just heard the performance is better and it might be able to do other things like gaming better because of the keyboard (kind of nice to have NES and SNES emulators on long drives to a ski trip or something like that).

If you're not going with the Moto Droid, then I'd say the Eris is unbeatable for the price.

It kind of sucks, but what I did was buy one of the pair of 1500 mAh batts from E-bay (slow ship from China): eris battery items - Get great deals on Cell Phones PDAs, Electronics items on eBay.com!

Roughly $15 per pair with a charger? Excellent deal. Now I have three batteries to rotate through. Battery life is an issue of the past.

They last about 8 hours or so before you have to switch them out, but it really depends on what you are running on your phone and how active you are with it.

BAttery sucks.
But since you're pretty much getting the phone for free... I recommend a 1750ma battery. You can find at Seidio.com
Have not looked into ebay.

In my case, i bought a seperate USB cable, so I keep it charging at work hooked to my computer. And also have car chargers in both my cars.
So my eris is pretty much always fully charged.

But i know it wouldn't last a full day with normal use(my normal use) without doing this. (I'm still using stock battery)

It's really hit or miss. My Eris has been a dream, I can typically expect two days out of a charge with moderate usage, but others have seen worse. It's a smartphone, so don't expect to get anything more out of it.

Remember every phone is going to go "obsolete" in a matter of months. The Eris is a wonderful phone for the price.

Even with moderate usage this seems crazy... Do you manage certain features to conserse battery? Like mobile networking?

I don't do anything. I know it sounds crazy, but I use email pretty heavily, google talk, skype on occasion, talk on the phone quite a bit, use the camera and a little bit of web browsing and can usually manage two days.

I never use wifi because I have great 3G coverage - occasionally I'll turn 3G off at night but I haven't been doing that lately.

Perhaps I'm just in the minority - I know most people can usually only get a day out of their phones, but I'd be happy with that too.

I like your thinking. People see the gaudy price tag and are immediately turned off. But if you think about it in these terms, its really not that bad. I just wish verizon will give us a stock android phone with the snapdragon. That, I would most definitely spend 200 bucks on!

I find that internet usage absolutely destroys my battery. Using it as a phone/ txt/ email device it makes it a 24 hours. But if i even sprinkle in internet it goes down to 10-15 hours really quickly.

I had the Droid before I got the Eris as well, and really never missed it. The only thing that makes the Droid a better choice IMO is the fact that you can do a lot more with root on the Droid then Eris but that doesn't make up for the fact that the keyboard and the build of the Droid is shoty. The Eris is very well built

Personally, I went with the Eris because I thought it was going to have the flash included in 2.1 I got ansy and loaded a leak of 2.1 (which does not include the flash I was looking for anyway). So, from personal experience and things that I am looking for in my phone I would say that know what you want, know you CAN or WILL get it and then make your decison...

Well I can tell you first hand the Incredible gets much better battery life then the Eris. Even though it's rated better, the Incredible lasts me about 4-6hrs longer .

Either way the Eris is a great phone for $20 and an extended battery for $20-$50 will give it great battery life

Don't get me wrong... for a lot of things it does make sense to weight out the cost difference over time...

But if every time you're going to buy something you buy the more expensive/top of the line item available because "it's only X more a month"...
you'll be broke in no time.
I think what he said originally in his first post is the smartest thing for him (maybe not for you) when he said he didn't want to pay $200 for the Incredible when there's a phone right next to it for $20.

Eris is a great little phone, and especially for the price available to you. Sure there are choices that would out-perform the Eris, but it certainly does more than enough for most. Price, form factor, design, reasonable flexibility, it's still a worthy buy in my opinion. If one needs more performance, more storage, more capacity...there's always a netbook.
