Who else wishes 2020 would be over with already?

This year, that started with such promise, the whole "20/20" thing, like we'd have clarity in this new year, things would be fresh and good and new...

...and then shit happened.

Starting with the unthinkable, Kobe Bryant's death, in January, then nosediving from there.

I, for one, cannot WAIT for this year to be over. 2021 cannot get here fast enough!

There have been very few years I felt this way about; the most recent one was 2011, which was awful for me personally. It started with my dad's death (that would be my father-in-law, who really WAS my dad despite not being related by blood, since I was 17), followed quickly by my best friend's son's death (active duty military, died of an undiagnosed heart ailment) at only 26, and went downhill from there. But nothing can compare to 2020. I mean a GLOBAL PANDEMIC?! And all the deaths...including Alex Trebek just this month...

2021, please hurry up and get here!

yep very much looking toward 2021. i think this just sucked for so many reasons.......thank god for boozes and cigars, the only good thing for me.....LOL
While I don't share your penchant for booze and cigars, I certainly understand it! This year sucks. Just one more month and a few days to go...

i think i have drank more and most definitely smoked more cigars this year then in any other year that is for sure......that will be one of my New Year's resolution to smoke and drink less.

Well, I've broken my own decades' old, cardinal rule of NO SMOKING [of any kind] in the house! Yep, I've been driven to smoke pot.

In all honesty, no, it wasn't 2020, per se, that drove me to that. But it HAPPENED in 2020, so what the hell?! :D

Odd thing, last year was the worst though, losing a few fellow flock from down here, just because their time was up.
Although spend a ton of time with my girl, up until like a few months ago or so, our first and only kiss was on Easter too.
The worst part yeah the pandemic, just wish I could take some time off and enjoy myself though.

I'm actually shocked that more people haven't chimed in! I thought this year was so universally bad, that everyone wanted 2021 to hurry up and get here. I know I do. You?
i think for a couple of reasons:
1. this new format of the forums sucks. now that we lost the "all" rather then "new" posts, you have to navigate to the specific forum to see new posts on old threads......so this thread is not as visible.
2. i think folks are so over 2020 to post......i know i am.

2020 has suck beyond all human comprehension. The lock downs, the millions who lost jobs, then all those who have died both famous and your average Joe.
When Kobe died I thought he was a pomous ass, not wanting to be brother with traffic. I did feel bad for his wife and other children.
I think the death that knocked everyone down was when Chadwick Boseman died, back in August. Things were absolutely horrible and then the news broke of his passing.
The country music scene was hit especially hard this year, Kenny Roger's, Joe diffy, Doug Supernaw, Charlie Daniel's
On the rock n roll side, the icon Eddie the f@cking G.O.A.T Van Halen, i am sorry in life time there will be never be another like him :(
We can't forget the kids and the screwed up school year they had.
I know alot of people have this mind sett that the split second it turns 00:00:01 -01/01/2021 we are going to wake from the nightmare of 2020.
The reality is 2020 is going to follow us into 2021.
The lock downs will still be in place,
I won't be surprise if Marshall law is declare in some states (California, Florida ). I can see dust to dawn crewfews. Millions are still going to be unemployed. Thousands and thousands of kids are still going to be learning through virtual classes.
I think we have a long way to go still

You're making some great points, @joe71, although I disagree with you on some of them. Notably, your opinion of Kobe. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but having followed his life and career from the time he was 17, my opinion is very different from yours.

What he did for the NBA, the Lakers, Los Angeles, and the whole world in terms of sports was amazing. But aside from his skills on the basketball court, he was a highly intelligent, learned, generous, and kind person. He was focusing on getting girls/women the recognition they deserve--and equal pay--in the sports world. He won an Oscar, for heaven's sake, because of his creativity as a filmmaker, of all things. He supported many organizations, financially and otherwise, and acted as a mentor for many young athletes.

Above all, he was a dad. A "girl dad," to be precise. He loved his family, and family was the the most important thing to him at the time of his death. As for taking a helicopter, you know, a lot of wealthy people commute by air, either in private planes or helicopters. From where he lived to where he was going, was quite a drive. He had the means to afford riding in a helicopter, so why not? (My aunt, who my uncle left very well off, has also commuted via helicopters. So what? :)) You'll notice that seven other people came along for the ride--and I'm sure he didn't charge them for it. People in real life who knew him say he was generous to a fault.

And people who still, to this day, hold against him what happened, in his youth, with that woman--who saw $$$$$$ big-time and tried to cash in--I can only say they don't understand the facts. The facts include this: men in sports, especially high-profile, really popular men in professional sports, have sex with women who are star-struck and fling themselves at them. Wilt Chamberlain used to brag about having had sex with 10,000 or something women!

As for the pandemic and its epic fallout, I don't think anyone believes life will magically return to normal at midnight, January 1st. But I do think people will be glad that 2020 is finally, thankfully, over. The virus will still be very much a part of our lives, at least well into 2021. Even when the first vaccines are distributed, the virus will still be around. It's going to take a concerted effort on the part of everyone to get it under control. It's been done before, so I know it can again. But as long as there are people who insist on politicizing a virus, well, it'll be an uphill climb.

i agree with @MoodyBlues, i have to defend Kobe. i would not call him pompous. he flew because he knows that it is way more efficient and faster then to crawl thru LA traffic. he could pack more things he can do by flying. you could be in a meeting and fly to another meeting in a heart beat. LA traffic is the worst and i do not blame him for flying around LA.

i also can understand why some fans would hate him.....i mean talk about GOAT!!!! he ruined many fans nights when he rolled into town and beat their teams.

his death was truly devastating for me. i got to shake his hand when he was a rookie doing some event at a Sports Authority near downtown LA. my regret was i failed to get his autograph then as i did not know he would become what he became then.

his death alone ruined 2020 for me......add in the this pandemic makes this year is the worst year i have ever experienced.

Very nicely said, @ocnbrze. :)
his death alone ruined 2020 for me
Me too. What's weird is that I was dreading that day, January 26, because it was a dear friend's birthday...who committed suicide. I was actually dreading that week, because my brother's birthday is just a few days later...and he committed suicide, too. Both of those deaths were stunning, of course, but not wholly unexpected, as they both had serious issues with depression. But Kobe? Kobe Bryant?

Young, strong, happy, healthy, loving being a dad to four kids, not even halfway through his life yet, DEAD? I was so shocked, so stunned, I couldn't grasp it. I'm guessing it was similar for you.

You're very lucky that you got to shake his hand. Remember, back in those days, how we [Lakers fans, collectively] would shout at our TV screens "NO! DON'T PASS IT TO KOBE!!" Air ball. *sigh* If we only knew then how it would turn out! :D

I still believe Kobe was a pomous ass with the helicopter thing, and yes I can understand why he used it, los angles traffic is the absolute worst in entire country, the absolute worst drivers are California drivers, they absolutely suck:mad::mad::maddroid::maddroid::maskeddroid::thumbsdowndroid: .
I do think its sad his life and the life of her daughter was cut short, I was never a fan of him or the lakers ,but it seems that he was bound to do greater things then being a basketball player .
This so called vaccine that is supposed to be arriving soon, I am calling bullshit :thumbsdowndroid: to me there are still too many unanswered questions about covid19 and the speed this cure or so called cure /vaccine was found is very suspicious. The fact that the food and drug administration is willing to by pass so many requirements to get this stuff distributed should have people concerned.
I still believe that are plenty of delusional idiots out there who are thinking January 1st 2021 everything will be great, covid19 will a distance memory , life will be back to normal
I think also alot of people realize that we still have a ways to go.
Final thought on Kobe, the whole Colorado sex scandal things, too me I have always felt it stage, some screw ball publicity stunt

We'll have to agree to disagree, @joe71! I just don't see how Kobe commuting via helicopter makes him a pompous ass. What would you suggest to all of the commuter air companies, that they shut down? They exist because there's a market for the service they provide. Just because you wouldn't use them doesn't mean I shouldn't have them available. :)

As for the worst drivers, they're definitely in Texas. Oh my f@(8&^g God...the tales I could tell of driving there.

The first vaccines are not likely to be very effective, but they'll be better than nothing. I have no concerns whatsoever about taking it when it's available to me. They're not going to be dangerous, they'll just not be 100% effective. And we also don't know yet how or if they're going to affect a person's ability to transmit the virus. But all of that will be worked out as time passes, more data are gathered, and the scientists improve the vaccines.

And, yeah, the Colorado thing, like I said, she saw $$$$$ and wanted in on it. Consenting to have sex, and going to a hotel room of her own volition to do it, and then claiming rape is ridiculous.

I haven't chimed in, because basically since last May it's been pretty much business as usual here. Did some travel during the holidays, visited some cities I'd not been before. We have to wear masks on public transport, and the school checks everyone's temp at the entrance. Only thing is really I won't be visiting the UK, maybe not until next summer.

I was just thinking about you last night, @mikedt. I realized I hadn't noticed you around lately. Glad to see you!

The way you experienced coronavirus over there in China is, indeed, very different from other parts of the world. Like the US. Masks--of all things!--became a political issue. An imbecile, who shall remain unnamed, hid information that could've been used proactively to better control this virus. So here we sit, California basically locked down again, ICUs across the country filled to overflowing, refrigerated semi-trucks once again being used as morgues, the economy in shambles. *SMH*
