So has anyone actually put some thought into why there is a race question on the census, job application, etc. What does it matter? They say it's for Equal Opportunity, but that doesn't seem Equal to me. If you are in America, you are either American or Illegal American or visiting the country for sports, education, lesiure, etc. As long as race is a question you must answer, there will be racism. Elimating the question will help everyone.

Morgan Freeman interviewed by Mike Wallace:

TBH I wonder the same thing. Sadly it doesn't seem like it will ever change.. at least not in the near future. Some things are just embedded into the world and it's near impossible to change the hearts and thoughts of people around the world. Even if the excuse is for statistical reasons, what does it matter? IMO the only way to find out someones race when hiring should be face to face interviews.

I don't mind if there is a race question on a job application, census, etc. I'm a Korean-American and proud of it! :) I obviously can't hide it and people treat me a little differently simply because I look like I was from another country. I've lost count on how many times people have asked me if I was born in the US. I was born in LA, grew up in LA, and will probably stay in LA (after I study in France, Italy, Spain, England, South Korea, Japan, and China. At least in South Korea, I will look like I'm from there. In Japan and China... not really. Asians have an unusual sense in knowing different Asian nationalities.

On the last census (UK, 2001) I put my race down as "Mongrel".. (No offence intended to anyone who believes they are from some "pure" race but I suspect we are all mongrels.... and IMHO the character of dog mongrels is usually better than the "pedigree" variety... a phenomenon likely to be repeated in other species...)

- and as for Religion I was "Jedi Knight" (as was 0.8% of the population of England & Wales). I'm now converted to the Flying Spaghetti Monster...

Lighten up guys: Race? We're all part of the "Human Race".

Cheers!

Lodger

PS Mum born in Brazil, Dad thought he was Welsh, I was born in England but have lived in Scotland for 10 years... makes my interest in sporting competitions last longer....

The United States is evolving into a much more ethnically diverse nation, and as this trend continues, there will be, hopefully, far less attention paid to attributes as inconsequential as race. As far as I am concerned, every race is the same, except that some folks have better or different suntans than others. I don't give a damn about skin color, but I still see non-whites discriminated against because of their "race," and that troubles me and always has.

I still see people of the same race, in the same family marginalising each other based on skin tone. There will always be something. It will always be stupid and petty. We can't really get rid of it, all we can do is not do it ourselves or reward it in others. -_-

It seems the only thing that will reduce racism is time. It will never completely go away, certain people will always belittle those who are different from them in any number of ways. I for one believe that embracing, acknowledging and accepting our differences is a good thing. We are not all the same, and we better start accepting that fact.

I had some acquaintances that used to call me racist, simply because I did not care for Obama. That flew out the window when they saw a family picture.
Racism is an easy charge to make, that foments a lot of discord. I really think that is the reason that so many people like to make that charge. As you might be able to tell from my Sign on, I am in Arizona. My family has been here since 1843. That is a long time ago. Very long, in fact, I do not know of another non-aboriginal person that has family that has been here that long, continually. Right now, we are going through all the hoo rah with our states immigration bill. I think, that more than anything else, as well as anything else that goes with all things associated with race, it is more on a bully pulpit, that is used by bully's for their own political advantage. I am certain that it is not about equality. They are intent on building their own power base, and are able to get people that are more willing to believe than read, to follow along with the lies and misconceptions that they perpetrate on people.

For what it is worth, in SB1070, there is specific language that does not allow racial profiling. You think, well, yeah, that will happen anyways. But it also does not allow enforcement of the law as a primary measure. Meaning, someone has to be arrested for a minimum of a misdemeanor, before the request to prove their legal right to live here is allowed. Personally, I don't understand how anyone would think that it is okay for a miscreant to be allowed to live in our country if there is way to easily deport them, and allow their country of origin to deal with them. For what it is worth, this bill had 79% support in the state, when it was passed. Ironically, those of hispanic decent were more supportive then the general population.

On a positive note, I do a lot of right of way work for the cities, as a contractor. I can now pull up to a corner, without 30 people trying to crawl into my truck, thinking I am looking for day laborers, and added bonus, I can easily pull into, and out of Home Depot.
