2.1 low signal fix

After getting 2.1 OTA, after a week or so my signal went from 3-4 bars all the time to 1 bar. I tried doing *228 a few times per week to make sure I had the most up-to-date software but to no avail. Today I figured what the hell, I'll call Verizon to see if they have anything for me. Sure enough after about 30 minutes on the phone (the tech gave me very slow and deliberate instructions :(), I am back up to hovering between 3 and 4 bars.

This is what he instructed me to do:

1) Menu > settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > system select and change to automatic

2) He asked me to take the battery out while the phone is still on (he called it a soft reset) but I just restarted the phone because I couldn't get my case off.

3) Had me run *228 select option 2

4) Once the phone rebooted, we had me place a test call and he called it to make sure I was still receiving calls.

Now I am getting good signal!

I hope this helps others out there.

FWIW someone I know with an eris was told by HTC that the low signal was a power saving method. That is the low bars while not on a call, not poor signal quality that some have experienced.

While having low bars, I also have poor signal quality. It happened after I flashed. I used to get great reception here in my office. 3 to 4 bars all the time. I now get no bars and bounce between -91dBm and -100. One of my offices is 300 yards from a verizon cell tower. I get 2 whole bars there and bounce between -71 and -90. Top notch suck. I get very few calls but when I do I would like to not fade in and out. Phone signal was perfect under 1.5 FWIW.

It must be problem on your phone or the towers around you. My signal is just as good as its always been. Even in the basement of my friend's house, which is notorious for being the worst place for cell signal in town. You can still call people with no problem, and get partial 1X data. And the signal was -96 dBm.

I don't understand. I waited forever to finally get 2.1 OTA. IMO, it was worth the wait. I love 2.1 and don't understand why anyone would want to go back.

Well, there is quite the mixed bag of Eris phone hardware quality, paleodust. Not to mention just user experience/preference (that's the biggie, in my opinion).

2.1 was eagerly awaited for by both those in possession of a low quality device (unknowingly in most cases) and those with less than ideal user experience but good hardware.

Once the OTA came to the phones of those particular people, only those with the poor experience and good hardware saw improvement.. plenty of users in that category I'm thinking.

Once the OTA came to the devices that were junky hardware-wise, no improvement has led them to crave 1.5, but they see the same old behaviors of course.

Some, very few, had good hardware but experienced bugs or annoyances they thought 2.1 would clear up. There is a mixed bag of results reported by those users.. the jury is still out on those folks. But many of them want to go back to 1.5, some to root.

The vast majority of those like us with good hardware saw good 2.1, so we're quite likely to just stick with the OTA and enjoy our phones.

my phone worked fine until 2.1
Little screen lag but I have figured out now that it was sense causing that.
In 1.5 I had great call quality and in 2.1 I now have crappy call quality. I constantly have people asking me if I am still there while I am talking. It is getting rather annoying.

The only reason I am hesitating on going back is because launcherpro beta. I am not sure if it works on 1.5

I have it running full time on 2.1 and my phone has never been smoother. (except the crapp call quality)
